Most Vietnamese ports are in the Southern Key Economic Region, since that is where most manufacturing facilities and cargoes are, plus the newly-built deep-water ports at Cai Mep outside HCMC have water depths of 12 to 14 meters (pp 33~36) that accommodate vessels of up to 110,000DWT (= 10,000 TEU) that provide Trans-Pacific service to the U.S. West Coast with T/S time = 15~16 days. The ports in the Northern Key Economic Region have shallower water depths, only about 6 to 8 meters, that accommodate vessels of up to 10,000 DWT or 15,000 DWT (pp 49-54) only, so they are “feeder terminals.” Saigon New Port (SNP) also offers feeder barge service for the Mekong Delta and Cambodia via Mekong River ports (pp 58~61).
