The American Chamber of Commerce in Vietnam (AmCham Vietnam), in cooperation with HCMC Institute of Hematology and Blood Transfusion and Ho Chi Minh City Humanitarian Blood Donation Center – Red Cross HCMC, organize the blood wave (June 03rd to June 24th) of blood donation in honor of the AmCham World Blood Donor Day, with the theme of “Thank you for saving my life”. The event is organized at 7 locations, namely Hoa Sen University (District 1), Renaissance Riverside Hotel (District 1), Oriflame Vietnam (Phu Nhuan District), Nike Office (District 1), Victoria Healthcare (Phu Nhuan District), New World Hotel Saigon (District 1) and Datalogic Vietnam (District 9).
World Blood Donor Day is one of the activities that WHO carries out globally to raise awareness of the need for safe blood and blood products and to thank voluntary unpaid blood donors who save lives everyday. 2015 marks the 12th anniversary of countries worldwide cooperating to organize this meaningful activity. This year’s campaign will highlight stories from people whose lives have been saved through blood donation, as a way of motivating regular blood donors to continue giving blood and people in good health who have never given blood, particularly young people, to begin doing so.
Today, in just 62 countries, national blood supplies are based on close to 100% voluntary unpaid blood donations. Besides, demand exceeds supply, and blood services face the challenge of making sufficient blood available, while also ensuring its quality and safety. An adequate supply can only be assured through regular donations by voluntary unpaid blood donors.
2015 marks the 5th anniversary of AmCham World Blood Donor Day with a few noticeable alterations. Firstly, a promotional video clip is conducted to record the meaningful thanks from blood receivers to all blood donors in Vietnam particularly and around the world in general. Moreoever, AmCham Vietnam also prepares a photographic background for event’s participants to take pictures and celebrate the 5th year anniversary together. Last but not least, the Program’s Fanpage at www.facebok.com/AmChamWBDD is used to connect the volunteers from the donation waves and spread out the spirit of blood donation in term of online photo contest voting.
Though voluntary blood donation increased nearly 8% last year, donated blood only satisfies about 58% of the nationwide need. Therefore, we at AmCham Vietnam have called for more volunteers, families, colleagues and friends to join this year. From 2011 up to now, the event gradually becomes the familiar day for AmCham members to donate blood. In 2015, the program also received many interests and frequent supports from enterprises such as Coca-Cola Vietnam, Datalogic Vietnam, Liberty Insurance, Victoria Healthcare, United International Pharma Co., Hoa Sen University, New World Hotel, Nike Vietnam, Oriflame Vietnam, Renaissance Riverside Hotel, Saigon Metropolitan Tower. Together, we can develop widespread voluntary participation and promote the initiative of the FDI sector in HCMC and in Vietnam.
Following the success from the past four years, AmCham continues to hold a photo contest in order to find not only photographically beautiful photos but also those that can convey and transfer the Program’s theme: Thank you for saving my life and slogan: Give freely, give often. Blood donation matters. As mentioned above, the criteria of this contest bases not only on the judges’ comments from organizers but also on the voting of online public audiences on the Program’s fanpage.
