The American Chamber of Commerce in Vietnam (AmCham Vietnam), in cooperation with HCMC Institute of Hematology and Blood Transfusion, organize the blood wave (July 12th to July 20th) of blood donation in honor of the AmCham World Blood Donor Day, with the theme of “Blood connects us all”. The event is organized at 6 locations, namely Oriflame Vietnam (Phu Nhuan District), Coca-Cola Vietnam (Thu Duc District), Nike Office at Metropolitan (District 1), Victoria Healthcare (Phu Nhuan District), Hoa Sen University (District 1), and Datalogic Vietnam (District 9).
World Blood Donor Day is one of the activities that WHO carries out globally to raise awareness of the need for safe blood and blood products and to thank voluntary unpaid blood donors who save lives everyday. 2016 marks the 13th anniversary of countries worldwide cooperating to organize this meaningful activity. This year’s campaign will highlight stories from people whose lives have been saved through blood donation, as a way of motivating regular blood donors to continue giving blood and people in good health who have never given blood, particularly young people, to begin doing so.
Today, in just 62 countries, national blood supplies are based on close to 100% voluntary unpaid blood donations. Besides, demand exceeds supply, and blood services face the challenge of making sufficient blood available, while also ensuring its quality and safety. An adequate supply can only be assured through regular donations by voluntary unpaid blood donors.
2016 marks the 6th anniversary of AmCham’s World Blood Donor Days with a few noticeable alterations. The first donation phase in January, Tet Holiday 2016 attracted 73 volunteers and collected 93 blood units (equivalent to 23,250 ml) to adapt the significant increase of blood demand. In July, managers, office workers and students of more than 70 companies and universities register to donate blood. Moreover, the Program’s Fan page at www.facebook.com/AmChamWBDD is used to connect the volunteers from the donation phases and spread out the spirit of blood donation.
Though voluntary blood donation increased nearly 8% last year, donated blood only satisfies about 60% of the nationwide need. Therefore, we at AmCham Vietnam have called for more volunteers, families, colleagues and friends to join this year. From 2011 up to now, the event gradually becomes the familiar day for AmCham members to donate blood. In 2016, the program also received many interests and frequent supports from enterprises such as Liberty Insurance Limited, Victoria Healthcare International Clinics, Coca-Cola Vietnam, Suntory Pepsico Vietnam, Datalogic Vietnam, Hoa Sen University, Nike Vietnam, Oriflame Vietnam, and Saigon Metropolitan Tower. Together, we can develop widespread voluntary participation and promote the initiative of the FDI sector in HCMC and in Vietnam.
