Theme: Asia/Pacific and ASEAN Integration: Opportunities and Challenges for Local and Global Firms
Increasingly, trade is growing within the Asia/ Pacific region, as regional institutions like APEC, ASEAN, and the Asian Development Bank create the hard and soft infrastructure for trade and investment. The older paradigm of AmChams focused on bilateral trade and investment relations between the United States and the host country is gradually being replaced by a more regional focus, particularly in Southeast Asia. At the same time, key economies in the Asia-Pacific area are establishing stronger links with each other: The China-ASEAN Free Trade Arrangement, Japan-ASEAN FTA, India-ASEAN trade arrangements, China-India, etc.
Changes in one APCAC economy have ripple effects throughout the region, for example,
China’s Draft Labor Contract Law, has created a lot of interest from businesses, labor leaders, and governments throughout the region that are looking at the “China development model.”
Intel’s decision to invest US$ 1 billion in a semiconductor assembly and test facility in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam, rather than in India or a second site in China, will pull additional electronic and component supplier manufactturers to Vietnam and Southeast Asia.
IBM announced a decision to open a Global Delivery Center in Ho Chi Minh City, with 5,000 software engineers, to supply cutting-edge services in the areas of e-commerce, supply chain management, distribution and e-governance to clients, primarily in manufacturing, distribution, finance, insurance, public and communication sectors. This may help develop closer relations with software solutions producers in India, and, of course, with Vietnamese-Americans in the software industry in the USA.
