In Vietnam, since the Government’s approval of the national program for encouraging voluntary blood donation in 2000, blood donation has been steadily increased. However, the current blood donation level only meets 45% of demand. For example, in the week after Tet this year, only 70 out of 970 hospitals in Vietnam can receive blood for treatments.
The AmCham CSR Group is working with the Hospital of Hematology and Blood Transfusion and Ho Chi Minh City Humanitarian Blood Donation Center of Red Cross Ho Chi Minh City to organize an AmCham World Blood Donor Day from 7:30am to 11:00am on dates and locations to be provided.
Targeting employees of the FDI sector and other enterprises in HCM City, the event aims to:
• Create wider awareness of the vital role of blood transfusion in saving lives and improving the health of Vietnamese people
• Motivate more employees of the business sector to become regular voluntary unpaid blood donors to ensure sufficient stocks of blood to meet national requirements, even in emergency situations
• Recognize regular voluntary unpaid donors as public health role models; it is because they lead healthy lifestyles and are regularly screened that they are able to donate blood regularly.
• Offer joint event management opportunity to build networking, cooperation, and synergy among AmCham CSR professionals and volunteers.
The transfusion of blood and blood products helps save millions of lives every year. It can help improve life expectancy and the quality of life for patients suffering from life-threatening conditions, and supports complex medical and surgical procedures. In many countries, demand outstrips supply, and blood services face the challenge of making sufficient blood available, while also ensuring its quality and safety. Today, in 62 countries, national blood supplies are based on 100% (or more than 99,9%) voluntary unpaid blood donation. However, 40 countries still depend on family donors and even paid donors and collect less than 25% of their blood supplies from voluntary unpaid blood donors. The goals of the WHO is for all countries to obtain their blood supplies entirely from voluntary unpaid donors by 2020
14 May 2013 — World Blood Donor Day, celebrated on 14 June every year, serves to raise awareness of the need for safe blood and blood products and to thank voluntary unpaid blood donors for their life-saving gifts of blood. With the slogan “Give the gift of life: donate blood”, this year’s campaign, the 10th anniversary of World Blood Donor Day, will focus on the value of donated blood to the patient, not only in saving life, but also in helping people live longer and more productive lives.
