The Politburo on May 10 announced its decision to appoint Nguyen Thien Nhan, member of the Politburo and president of the Vietnam Fatherland Front Committee, as secretary of the HCMC Party Committee, replacing Dinh La Thang.
A ceremony was held at the headquarters of the HCMC Party Committee to announce the decision, and attended by Nguyen Thi Kim Ngan, Politburo member and chairwoman of the National Assembly, and Pham Minh Chinh, Politburo member and head of the Party Central Committee’s Organization Commission.
Nguyen Thien Nhan emphasized that May 10 was a very special day for him when he returned to the city for the second time, entrusted with this task by the Party and the people. The first time he came back to HCMC was when he finished his service in the army.
Nhan spent 23 years in the city before, having served as vice president at the HCMC Polytechnic University (now HCMC University of Technology), deputy Party chief of the Ho Chi Minh Communist Youth League in HCMC, and vice chairman of the HCMC People’s Committee.
Nhan returned to the city the second time on May 10 and was warmly welcomed by the municipal Party Committee, which Nhan said deeply moved him.
With the trust of the Party General Secretary and the Politburo, Nhan promised to do his best to fulfill the task, and continue inheriting the city construction effort from the former generations of leaders and people.
Nhan, who was born in 1953 in Tra Vinh Province, is a professor of economics.
He spent a long time working in HCMC, from 1983 when he started teaching at the HCMC Polytechnic University, and then became deputy secretary of the Ho Chi Minh Communist Youth League in 1988.
After his study in Germany, he returned to the HCMC Polytechnic University and served as vice president until 1997 when he became director of the HCMC Department of Science, Technology and Environment.
From 1999 to 2001, he served as vice chairman of the HCMC People’s Committee. In 2001-2006, he was a member of the Standing Committee of the HCMC Party Committee, standing vice chairman of the HCMC government, and member of the National Council for Science and Technology Policy.
At the 10th National Party Congress, he was elected to the Party Central Committee and became the Minister of Education and Training in 2006. One year later, in August 2007, he was approved as deputy prime minister and minister of education and training.
At the end of the tenure, in 2010, he was elected to the Party Central Committee again and assumed the post of deputy prime minister. In the middle of the term, in May 2013, he was voted into the 11th Politburo.
In September that year, he became president of the 7th Vietnam Fatherland Front Committee.
In 2014, at the 8th National Congress of the Vietnam Fatherland Front Committee, he was reappointed as president. At the 12th Party Congress in early 2016, Nhan was reelected to the Politburo, taking charge as the leader of the Vietnam Fatherland Front Committee until May 10, when he was named secretary of the HCMC Party Committee replacing Dinh La Thang.
He is a member of the National Assembly for the 10th, 12th, 13th and 14th tenures.
