(WASHINGTON, Sept. 6, 2017) – The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) and the Office of the U.S. Trade Representative (USTR) today announced that the government of Vietnam has notified the U.S. that it will resume imports of American distillers dried grains (DDGS).  In December 2016, Vietnam suspended imports of U.S. DDGS after reported detections of quarantine pests in U.S. shipments.  Prior to the suspension, Vietnam was the third-largest market for U.S. DDGS, with exports valued at more than $230 million in 2016.  The resolution of this issue also opens the way for corn and wheat shipments, which were restricted due to previous treatment requirements.

The Ministry of Industry and Trade’s proposal to increase the feed-in tariff (FiT) of wind power is expected to take projects currently on paper into implementation. The Ministry of Industry and Trade (MoIT) has proposed the government to increase the FiT of wind power from onshore wind power plants to 8.77 cent from the current 7.8 cent per kWh.

Vietnam holds many advantages from the free trade agreements it has with other APEC members, according to Vietnamese Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs and APEC 2017 SOM chairman Bui Thanh Son.

“Joining free trade agreements (FTA) can help Vietnam access foreign markets and seek long-term and stable markets for local goods, particularly agro-forestry-fishery products, footwear, and electronics, and improve the competitiveness of Vietnamese businesses,” Son said at the Dialogue on RTAs and FTAs at the APEC-SOM 3 held on August 27 in Ho Chi Minh City.

APEC’s Committee of Industry and Trade (CIT) on Friday continued its two-day meeting in HCM City.

Marie Sherylyn D Aquia, chair of the CTI, told Viet Nam News: “We continue to have discussions so we can have some very good deliverables for the November meeting. So we had a discussion on free trade facilitation in the Asia-Pacific. We also had discussions on trade facilitation.”
