Event Description
Don’t let lockdown get you down. Take a break Friday afternoon with your current house/podmates (children, parents, and pets included) and beverages of choice. Learn new DIY healthy cooking skills and contribute to a good cause. U.S. Consul General Marie Damour will kick off the event. Celebrity Chef Jack Lee will provide expert advice to add some fun flair to whatever is in your kitchen, joined by AmCham’s own Woman in Leadership Committee Vice Chair, and businesswoman turned mommy chef, Linh Thai. All proceeds from the event will be donated to two local charities, Food Bank Vietnam and Saigon Children’s Charity, focused on providing food and meals for those in need.

Vietnam has made major gains combating the COVID-19 pandemic. However, the country is still experiencing the economic consequences of the lockdown. Many in the country are facing economic insecurity and job loss. Foodbank Vietnam has been working to deliver food to people in need in Ho Chi Minh City, Hanoi, and Dong Nai Province, serving 2,000 meals per day through its Field Kitchens. In order to follow social distancing guidelines, volunteers from the food bank also deliver lunch boxes via motorbike to people in need. |
Saigon Children’s Charity
CHILDREN ARE THE HIDDEN VICTIMS OF COVID-19 Children are extremely vulnerable during a global crisis like COVID-19. Many are living in households hit by the economic impact of the pandemic, lacking food and money for vital bills, and inevitably their mental wellbeing can also suffer long-term impacts caused by lockdowns and separation. Saigon Children’s Charity is sending “COVID backpacks” for children to care for them physically and mentally. Every “COVID backpack” package that saigonchildren delivers to struggling families contains essential food items to help them with nutritious meals during this time. It also has gifts for the children, to take care of their mental wellbeing when the adults around them may be consumed with worries and stress right now. So what exactly does a package provide? – 30kg of rice – 1 box of instant noodles – 5 cans of sardines – 1 package of dry sausages – 1 bottle of fish sauce – 1 bottle of soy sauce – 1 bottle of cooking oil – Seasoning powder (850g) – Sugar (1kg) – 2 bags of dishwashing liquid – 5 bars of soap – Children’s books – Toy – Handbook for parents on taking care of children’s mental health – 1 fabric bag We need your support to help as many families as possible, as fast as possible, because these families don’t have a lot of time to spare before they go hungry. Marie C. Damour
U.S. Consul General in Vietnam Marie C. Damour is a career member of the Senior Foreign Service, having joined the State Department in 1993, and is assigned to Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam as Consul General beginning in August 2019. She has previously served as Director in the Office of Maritime Southeast Asia in the Bureau of East Asian and Pacific Affairs, as well as in the Office of Policy Coordination and Public Affairs in the Bureau of Consular Affairs. Previous overseas assignments include Deputy Chief of Mission in Wellington, New Zealand; Minister Counselor for Consular Affairs in Brasilia, Brazil; and Chief of Visa Services at the U.S. Embassy in London. She has also served domestically as Special Assistant in the Office of the Secretary, as well as Consular Chief overseas in Iraq, Vietnam, and Mauritania. Ms. Damour is a graduate of the College of William and Mary in Williamsburg, Virginia; she speaks French, Portuguese, Vietnamese. |
Chef Jack Lee
Oscar winners Angelina Jolie, Clint Eastwood, and Hilary Swank, as well as icons like Oprah Winfrey and Barbra Streisand know him as more than a chef. For these notable names, Chef Jack Lee is a true artist both in the presentation of his meals and one’s palate. Chef Lee hit the ground running after graduating the California School of Culinary Arts and the Le Cordon Bleu program, where he began refining his skills by working at a variety of prestigious restaurants with influential chefs from around the world. Chef Humberto Contreras and Chef Douglas Dodd of the Hotel Bel-Air are among the recent influences in Chef Lee’s career. Chef Jack Lee’s dedication and vast experience for over a decade has proven him to be one of the finest chefs in the business. His impressive versatility and mastery of Asian and California-French cuisine led to his position as The Banquet Chef at Hotel Bel Air where his career flourished for three years catering the birthday parties of such luminaries as Oprah Winfrey, Patti Labelle, and Nancy Reagan. In addition, Chef Lee successfully handled several entertainment industry events from small personalized dinners for Angelina Jolie and Kobe Bryant to big events such as the Oscar celebration |
Linh Thai
CEO and Founder, TVL Group Linh Thai has more than 20 years of experience in finance, marketing and operations. Linh is the Founder and CEO of TVL Group, a consulting company focused on skills-gap training and development, as well as branding and marketing services. She is also Senior Advisor for Openspace Ventures. Her previous roles include CEO of Vingroup Ventures, a corporate venture capital fund. Prior to joining Vingroup, Linh was Head of Strategy and Operations of VinaCapital Group, one of the largest fund managers in Vietnam. Before this, she was Investment Director at DFJ VinaCapital, one of the first venture capital funds in Vietnam. Linh is also known for her role as one of the main judges of the reality TV show Shark Tank Vietnam. Linh graduated with honors from the University of Southern California and received an MBA at The Wharton School. She grew up in Los Angeles, CA, and has considered Ho Chi Minh City to be home for the past 12 years. She is a mother to two daughters ages 5 and 1.5 years. |
Mary Tarnowka
Executive Director, AmCham Vietnam Mary Tarnowka joined AmCham Vietnam as Executive Director in August 2019. She continues to carry out AmCham’s long-term mission to strengthen the U.S.-Vietnam trade and investment partnership and serve as the “voice of American business” in Vietnam, established when it was founded informally just after the trade embargo was lifted in 1994.
