Japan keen to increase investment in Vietnam

(VOV) – An economic delegation from the Japan Chamber of Commerce and Industry (JCCI) visited Vietnam from September 23-26 to look for investment and cooperation opportunities in various fields.

The 100-member delegation led by JCCI Chairman Tadashi Okamura includes representatives and leaders from major Japanese groups such as All Nippon Airways, Atena, Honda Motor, Itochu, Marubeni, Mitsui, Sumitomo and Taiheiyo Cement.

Korea’s CJ Group targets Vietnam and Greater Mekong Subregion for global expansion

Apr 8, 2012. CJ Group chairman Lee Jay-hyun emphasized the importance of the soaring Vietnamese market for the leading food and entertainment conglomerate to expand its global presence, group officials said Sunday.

According to the group, executive officials including the chairman, his elder sister and vice chairman Lee Mi-kyung plus CEOs of affiliates, gathered last week in Ho Chi Minh to discuss strategies for Vietnam.

During the three-day gathering April 3-5, the chairman picked Vietnam as one of the most attractive markets, along with China, considering its young population and the growth potential of its retail sector.

FDI down as investors chill

July 11, 2011. Vietnam may lose out to neighbouring competitors if this year’s downtrend in foreign direct investment inflows is anything to go by.

Registered foreign direct investment (FDI) in the first six months of 2011 fell 48.1 per cent year-on-year to $ 5.6 billion, according to the Ministry of Planning and Investment’s Foreign Investment Agency (FIA).

Disbursed FDI from January 1 to June 22 also slightly dropped by 1.9 per cent year-on-year to $ 5.3 billion, ending the upward trend of the net FDI inflow over the previous two years.

Reelected People’s Committee chairman says HCMC will address infrastructure bottlenecks

HCMC – The HCMC government will continue to cope with infrastructure bottlenecks as one of the priority tasks in 2011-2016 to fuel growth, re-elected chairman Le Hoang Quan said.

Quan underscored the urgent need for infrastructure improvement while speaking to reporters after the 58-year-old was re-elected as chairman of the HCMC People’s Committee by the HCMC People’s Council at its first session in the new 2011-2016 term.

He took the occasion to review the city’s social and economic performance in the first half. The city saw its gross domestic product expanding 9.9% in January-June, compared to the year’s target of 12%, he said, and the city would not revise the target and would do its best to turn it into reality despite challenges arising from escalating prices and unfavorable world economic conditions.

One in five Vietnamese has hepatitus

Around 18 million Vietnamese have contracted hepatitis and one-fifth of them have developed complication due to improper treatment, said Pham Hoang Phiet, chairman of the Ho Chi Minh City Liver and Gall Association.
