US: CPSC fines Sunsations $ 60,000 over children’s drawstrings

Sep 7, 2011. Beachwear retailer Sunsations Inc has agreed to pay $60,000 to settle allegations that it failed to report that it had sold potentially hazardous children’s clothing.

According to the US Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), the Virginia Beach based retailer sold children’s hooded sweatshirts with drawstrings at the neck from March 2008 through November 2010.

Drawstrings pose a strangulation hazard to children that can result in serious injury or death, and federal law requires manufacturers, distributors and retailers to tell the CPSC if any items pose such a risk.
