U.S. Commerce Secretary Carlos M. Gutierrez announced he will lead a business development mission to Vietnam in late 2007. The mission will highlight export opportunities for U.S. businesses, and is the first Secretarial Business Development mission to visit Vietnam.

Weather – Tropical depressions, storms, and typhoons

Vinacapital launches Vietnam Infrastructure Fund
According to the World Bank, Vietnam will need to invest $ 140 billion in infrastructure over the next five years. Vietnam’s rapid growth over the last decade has placed increasing strains on its ageing infrastructure with demand fast outstripping supply.

Ho Chi Minh Golf Trail
“It’s close to being the most diverse landscape I’ve ever seen. Vietnam just has it all, from the most beautiful, tropical waters you can imagine in places like Phu Quoc and Phan Thiet to Sapa in the Tonkinese Alps, which top out with 8,000-foot peaks. There are compelling cityscapes, then you’ve got a place like Dalat, which is similar to the foothills of the High Sierras. It’s beyond exotic.”

Vietnam Hotel Survey 2007 reports record growth
Net income as a percentage of revenue of four – and five-star hotels was 21.1% and 39.7%. Foreign visitor arrivals in 2006 reached 3.6mil, of these, 22.7% were business travelers, and 59.9%, tourists.

New terminal opens at Ho Chi Minh City’s Tan Son Nhat International Airport
The new terminal will serve all the 35 international airlines that are using the existing terminal, which will be for domestic flights only. The terminal project, which started construction in August 2004, cost a total of some VND3.2 trillion (US$ 200 million), and will be able to handle eight to 10 million passengers a year when in full service.

U.S. firm to design township project in Ho Chi Minh City
About US$ 3-5 billion would be needed to develop the township northwest of Hoc Mon District and about 20 kilometers from downtown Ho Chi Minh City. The U.S. firm, HOK International, a St. Louis-based global architectural design firm, designed Oriole Park at Camden Yards (for the Baltimore Orioles) and the U.S. National Air & Space Museum, the world’s most-visited mueum.

Saigontourist targets 2,000 more deluxe rooms in 5 years
Last year, the company welcomed around 1.5 million tourists, up 1.6% on the previous year, and obtained total revenue of nearly VND5.2 trillion, up 13% year-on-year. There are currently 25,500 hotel rooms of three- to five-star rating throughout the country, and 6,500 out of the number in Ho Chi Minh City alone.

Dong Nai Bridge Traffic Diversion to start Aug 20
Beginning August 20, vehicles seating seven passengers or less and heading towards Ho Chi Minh City will be diverted to the Hoa An bridge, also located in Bien Hoa city.

Dong Nai Bridge may collapse at any time
The 43-year-old Dong Nai Bridge, connecting three industrial hubs—Ho Chi Minh City, Dong Nai, Binh Duong—can collapse any time, an official has warned. It is ” … safe, unless overloaded … ,” according to the Ministry of Transport.

East West Corridor Week, 27 Aug – 01 Sep
The East-West Corridor stretches 1,450 km across Myanmar, Thailand, Laos and Vietnam, from Mawlamyine in Myanmar to DaNang City in Vietnam. It is one of the key economic corridors in the Greater Mekong Subregion (GMS), which aims at deepening integration and trade, investment linkages, and reducing poverty in the region. When the road infrastructure is completed, the EWEC may well become not only a dynamic development hub, but also an important link connecting the Greater Mekong Sub-Region to huge markets in Northeastern and Southern Asia. The Government of Vietnam has decided to organize the EWEC Week 2007 from August 27 to September 1, 2007 in DaNang City with a view to promoting trade, investment and tourism opportunities of the EWEC to business leaders within and outside the region.
