Up to 30 percent increase in minimum wage as of Jan 1, 2008

Minimum wages will increase, up to 30 percent in some cases, for both the foreign-invested and local sectors next year, the government has announced.

The three different region-based minimum wage levels are as follows:

1. Employees in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City’s urban districts will receive no less than VND1 million (US$ 62.3) a month in the foreign sector and VND620,000 ($ 38.6) in the domestic sector.

2. Workers in industrial parks, rural Hanoi and HCMC districts, Hai Phong, Ha Long, Vung Tau and several other developing areas will receive no less than VND900,000 ($ 56.1) in the foreign sector and VND580,000 ($ 36.1) in the local sector.

3. Foreign and local businesses throughout the rest of the country will have to pay employees VND800,000 (US$ 49.8) and VND540,000 ($ 33.6) per month.
