Sec 911 – Housing cost amount eligible for exclusion or deduction
The U.S. Treasury Department issued a notice concerning housing costs eligible for exclusion or deduction by U.S. citizens and Permanent Residents receiving overseas earned income.
PNTR / WTO Accession – focus on apparel exports, subsidies, and anti-dumping.
Vietnam’s apparel exports to the U.S. account for about one-half of Vietnam’s total exports ($2.9 billion of $6.6 billion in 2005). So there was a considerable reaction last week after Sentators Dole and Graham released a Sep 28 letter from USTR Schwab and Commerce Secretary Gutierrez that promised to monitor Vietnam’s commitment to eliminate WTO-prohibited subsidies to the textile and apparel industry by the date of accession. A key point of the Schwab/Gutierrez letter to Senators Dole and Graham was that the Commerce Department will examine whether self-initiation would be warranted under U.S. law and the applicable WTO rules, including ” … sufficient evidence of dumping, injury and causal link” to justify self-initiation. AmCham to donate US$ 5,000 for relief of typhoon victims
Chairman Walter Blocker announced that AmCham will donate US$ 5,000 to the Vietnam Red Cross to support relief operations for those affected by Typhoon Xangsane in Central Vietnam. He appealed for AmCham member companies to join in the effort with contributions of product or cash to the Vietnam Red Cross. Over the past few years, AmCham has donated US$ 27,000 to the Vietnam Red Cross to support their disaster relief efforts and help strengthen their capacity for service delivery.
US to donate US$ 100,000 for relief of typhoon victims
According to a U.S. Embassy press release, the United States will grant US$ 100,000 as an urgent disaster relief to victims of Typhoon Xangsane which struck central Vietnam last week, leaving over 70 people dead or missing.
East Meets West Foundation Appeals for Assistance for Typhoon Relief Efforts
AmCham HCMC member East Meets West Foundation appeals for member contributions to support its Village of Hope in Danang, where 180 children disadvantaged, at-risk children live and are cared for. Many of them are orphans and 45 of them are deaf. “VOH lost most of its roof,” says a concerned Mark Conroy, EMW Country Director. “Most of their windows are gone and they are without electric power. We need help immediately to keep these young children out of the elements and safe.”
Vice Minister of Planning and Investment to lead delegation to USA, Oct 9-17
The delegation, which includes government officials and senior business executives, will visit Washington DC, Chicago, and San Francisco.
AmCham Scholarship Program 2006
The deadline for applications is October 10. Nearly 800 application forms have been downloaded from www.amchamvietnam.com. In partnership with National University of Ho Chi Minh City (NUH), AmCham will grant scholarships to 20 top students of NUH including: University of Polytechnique, University of Natural Sciences, University of Social Sciences and Humanities, Faculty of Economics. U.S. University Fair: Institute of International Education, Oct 11 in HCM City
The Institute of International Education (IIE)-Vietnam will organize its annual higher education fair on Oct 11 at the Legend Hotel in HCM City. A record 65 institutions will participate in the HCMC fair. This level, double that of 2005, reflects growing interest among American institutions in the recruitment of Vietnamese students. Last year’s fairs attracted over 4,000 attendees, including students, parents and others interested in learning about study opportunities in the U.S. IIE Higher Education Fairs in Ho Chi Minh City, Hanoi and throughout Asia are free and open to the public.
