Lockheed Martin-build VINASAT-1 Satellite Launched Successfully for VNPT The satellite system will improve telecommunications in Vietnam by transmitting radio, television and telephone communications to all corners of the country, and will enable state-of-the-art communications, providing new services such as mobile broadcasting, direct-to-home television, video conferencing and data transmission.
First VinaSat launched amid rising telecom demand The $ 250 million Vinasat-1 project, which includes a 2,637- kilogram (3-ton) satellite built by Lockheed Martin Corp. carried by a rocket from France’s Arianespace, will provide telecommunications services including broadcasting, Internet and voice.
Compliance, Training and Anti-Bribery Conventions in China As China continues to evolve and grow into its increasingly important role in the world economy, U.S. and European regulators will expect compliance by businesses that choose to conduct business here. Businesses with operations in China will be responsible for the standards of their operations, in which unethical practices, in terms of international business standards, cannot be explained away as “local business culture.” Nor will ignorance on the part of local employees be acceptable.
Intel reshaping Vietnam with billion-dollar chip assembly and test plant Intel picked Vietnam, a nation of 85 million that lacks a single world-class university and is known for making shoes, over India, whose army of engineers has reordered the global software industry. By the end of 2009, chipsets (pairings of more than one chip used for specialized tasks) are expected to roll off the assembly line to feed the company’s massive global supply chain from a complex that will equal the size of nearly nine football fields and employ about 4,000 workers. In June 2008, Intel will host a conference for more than 200 tech vendors, some of whom are expected to set up operations in Vietnam.
Vietnam denies using illegal timber Over 80% of material wood supplied to Vietnam is imported from around the world, mainly from New Zealand, Australia, the U.S. and within the ASEAN region. Last year, the country imported around two million cubic meters of timber.
Siemens corrupt payments probe widens to power unit The German prosecutors’ Siemens probe has widened from telecommunications to its power-transmission unit, whose former head is now a criminal suspect. Both the German probe and any settlement with U.S. regulators likely will take longer. Siemens has flagged 1.3 billion euro (US$ 2 billion) in suspicious transactions between 2000 and 2006, with more than half originating outside the telecom business. A German court fined Siemens 201 million euro last October for paying 12 million euro in telecom-sector bribes to government officials in Nigeria, Russia and Libya.
Vietnam copes with long-term electricity shortfall until 2020 Blackouts are expected as demand rises in the summer months. Unexpected blackouts at water pumping stations in Hanoi recently have led to shortages of drinking water in several neighborhoods. A local water authority official said water stations had lost power 66 times in the previous two weeks, 46 times without prior warning.
Jetstar expands into Vietnam with Pacific Airlines An extra 30 planes will be purchased. That will mean a lot of additional services out of Vietnam into Asia.
