Vietnam benefits from “China plus one” strategy “A lot of contact manufacturers have moved to Vietnam,” said the CEO for the Asia-Pacific region at DB Schenker. “The country has moved beyond its early cargo base and increasingly takes care of electronics manufacturing, a trend that has been stoked further by many companies’ ‘China plus one’ strategy,’’ he added.

Delta Airlines opens office in Ho Chi Minh City Delta Airlines has opened an office in preparation for the June 1 launch of a daily service between the United States and Ho Chi Minh City, via its Tokyo hub, where passengers can make connections to nine U.S. cities.

Asia Foundation Launches Project to Support Public Libraries and Internet Access in Vietnam The Asia Foundation announced an 18-month project to strengthen public library institutions and support public Internet access in Vietnam, supported by a grant of $ 400,715 from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. The project will help expand the public’s access to information in rural areas and provide opportunities for Vietnamese citizens to significantly improve their daily lives.

Vietnam Airlines profit falls on travel slump, weaker dong Vietnam Airlines Corp.’s first-quarter pretax profit fell 76 percent after the state-owned carrier flew fewer passengers and suffered from a weaker dong.

Chinese company to mine bauxite in Central Highlands Vietnam is blessed with the world’s third-largest reserves of bauxite, the raw material for aluminum. The government is seeking to attract $ 15 billion or more of investment to develop bauxite mining and aluminium refining projects by 2025. It has already signed a contract with a subsidiary of Chinalco, a state-owned Chinese mining group, to build one mine and agreed with Alcoa, an American aluminum giant, to carry out a feasibility study for another.

Former Party Secretary Calls for Tougher Anti-Corruption Drive Le Kha Phieu said, “The progress made leaves much to be desired.” He added that the biggest problem facing Vietnam was figuring out how to create a “healthy administration.”

ADB projects 4.5% growth for Vietnam The ADB annual Asian Development Outlook said growth in Asia’s developing economies would fall to 3.4 percent this year, with Southeast Asia as a whole almost stagnant with a 0.7 percent rise. However, “when it comes to Vietnam, actually we should not use the word ‘downturn’ or ‘recession.’ It’s just a slowdown,” ADB’s country economist for Vietnam said, projecting the growth to rebound to 6.5 percent in 2010.
