Vietnam economic growth slows to 5.4% (Wall Street Journal) Vietnamese authorities recently announced a shift from its long-standing focus on growth to policies that promise greater stability as the economy continues to be pounded by surging inflation and a rampant trade deficit.
Vietnam looks to slash public spending by $ 2.4 billion or 7.4% this year. By reducing investment levels, authorities are hoping to curb the amount of cash circulating in the economy, which in theory should cool growth and help bring inflation down. The Vietnamese economy remains confronted by major imbalances that have become so serious that authorities recently reversed their pro-growth policy to one that focuses more on containing surging inflation and producing greater stability.
Vietnam raises fuel prices to record levels by up to 15%. Diesel is 21,100 vnd/liter (about US$ 1.00), and gasoline is 21,300 vnd/liter (about US$ 1.01).
