Managing your performance by measuring your risks! (part II) Revered management thinker Peter Drucker wrote that “Above all, management is responsible for producing results. Management has to give direction to the institution it manages.” Leading an organization to think about and act on risk and performance in an integrated way will no doubt face roadblocks. But, companies should focus first on a few key areas for integration and improvement.

Vietnam: Reform to Stabilize Economy Vietnam’s once-booming economy has foundered in recent years, thrown off balance in part by burgeoning debts at some of its sprawling state-owned enterprises. which diversified into new industries. The strategy in many cases backfired. In some instances, state-owned enterprises took on unmanageable levels of debt or invested in businesses that they didn’t fully understand. Shipbuilder Vinashin, for instance, nearly collapsed under $ 4.4 billion in debts in the summer of 2010 and later defaulted on some of its foreign obligations after moving into businesses as diverse as brewing and tourist resorts.
20 stolen vehicles exported from the U.S. to Vietnam seized by U.S. Customs worth $ 1.5 million, included BMW 5 Series and Mercedes SUVs, Lexus, an Audi Quattro and a black, 2010 Ferrari 458 Italia valued at $ 280,000.
EU, Vietnam Agree to Pursue Trade Pact The agreement signals the beginning of a long process. The Commission will have to consult with EU member nations before it can launch formal negotiations with Vietnam.
Myanmar: the Next Tiger? Hub for Low-cost Manufacturing (BusinessWeek) The country’s reform comes at a time when there’s a potential opening for a low-wage Asian alternative to China and India. China’s economy is slowing as manufacturing costs increase, labor-intensive manufacturers feel the pinch of higher wages, and look for alternative locations. India’s coalition government is rudderless, beset by scandals and struggling to push through economic reforms such as liberalization of the country’s retail sector.
Bangla Desh: The Next Hot Spot in Apparel Sourcing? Projected to Surpass Vietnam Export-value growth will double by 2015 and nearly triple by 2020 as European and US buyers plan to expand the share of their sourcing from Bangladesh to 25 to 30 percent by 2020, from an average of 20 percent now.
FDI rivals turn up the heat on Vietnam Vietnam dropped from 12th to 14th ranked on the FDI Confidence Index, while Indonesia, Malaysia, and others moved up. The Index is a regular survey of global executives conducted by A.T. Kearney. Companies participating in the survey account for more than $ 2 trillion in annual global revenue.
FDI: strong driving force for Vietnam’s economy “Without FDI, the nation’s economy must have stood at about a meager growth rate of 3-4% annually for the last 25 years,” said Professor Nguyen Mai, chairman of the Vietnam Association of Foreign Invested Enterprises.
