Vietnamese miracle begins to run out of fuel for Vietnam Airlines The sale to foreign investors of between 10 per cent and 20 per cent of Vietnam Airlines has been on the cards this year, but it is now unlikely to happen before 2009. The expected delay to the privatisation of Vietnam Airlines comes as the lustre on the country’s recent economic boom has begun to fade. One fund manager described the collapse in the stock market as a timely reminder of the meaning of risk in emerging markets.

Vietnam: coping with skyrocketing fuel prices Vietnam’s government, on Jul. 22, suddenly raised domestic fuel prices by 36 percent. In March the government had frozen fuel prices along with nine other “essential” commodities. And early July there was an official promise that prices of petrol and diesel would not be disturbed until the end of the year. Many believe that last week’s fuel price increases will have a cascading effect on all goods in a matter of weeks.

Inflation returns to haunt dollarized Vietnam (Reuters) “The bigger challenge for the authorities at the moment is that deposit rates of 17 to 18 percent aren’t sufficiently attractive for domestic depositors to commit money to dong on a large scale.”

Vietnam to triple car registration fee Vietnam will raise car registration taxes from next month to up to 15 percent, from 5 percent now, in an effort to reduce traffic congestion and fuel consumption.

Vietnam to sell 1 trillion vnd govt bonds on Aug 8 The proceeds will go to funding major infrastructure projects such as roads, bridges and ports. At its latest auction on July 11, the State Treasury failed to sell any of its two-year and three-year bonds worth a combined 500 billion dong because no participants joined the auction.

Thousands of workers strike in inflation-battered Vietnam Hoang Ngoc Thanh, vice chairman of the Vietnam Labour Federation, said workers’ salaries are too low and many face difficulties meeting costs for rent and healthcare, reported the Tien Phong daily. Understanding the web browser threat and the “insecurity iceberg” There have been frequent reports of hundreds of thousands of Web sites succumbing to mass-defacement, which cause once benign sites to turn against their visitors. Even pages owned by institutions like the United Nations (un.org), the UK government (.gov.uk) and many others have succumbed to such attacks. In 2007, Google uncovered more than three million malicious Web addresses (URLs) that initiate “drive-by downloads.” More than 600 million users are at risk because they are not running the latest most secure Web browser version in June 2008.
