East West Corridor Week, 27 Aug – 01 Sep
The East-West Corridor stretches 1,450 km across Myanmar, Thailand, Laos and Vietnam, from Mawlamyine in Myanmar to DaNang City in Vietnam. It is one of the key economic corridors in the Greater Mekong Subregion (GMS), which aims at deepening integration and trade, investment linkages, and reducing poverty in the region. When the road infrastructure is completed, the EWEC may well become not only a dynamic development hub, but also an important link connecting the Greater Mekong Sub-Region to huge markets in Northeastern and Southern Asia. The Government of Vietnam has decided to organize the EWEC Week 2007 from August 27 to September 1, 2007 in DaNang City with a view to promoting trade, investment and tourism opportunities of the EWEC to business leaders within and outside the region. U.S. Commerce Secretary to lead Business Development Mission to Vietnam
U.S. Commerce Secretary Carlos M. Gutierrez announced he will lead a business development mission to Vietnam in late 2007. The mission will highlight export opportunities for U.S. businesses, and is the first Secretarial Business Development mission to visit Vietnam.

Vietnam to become Southeast Asia’s fastest growing contract manufacturing hub
A June 2007 report by industry research group iSuppli predicts that contract manufacturing in Vietnam will grow more than 100% annually between 2006 and 2011—from $ 36 million in 2006 to as much as $ 1.8 billion by 2011 as more major manufacturers move in.
Vietnam’s higher hotel prices reduce number of tourists
In the first 6 months of this year, occupancy rate at Vietnamese hotels has averaged 90-95 percent. In Ho Chi Minh City the figure is 99 percent, with most high-end hotels full.
World Bank President Zoellick to Visit Hanoi, Aug 5-7
After visiting Australia for the APEC Finance Ministers meeting, he will come to Vietnam to hold talks with officials, business leaders and members of civil society organizations. He will travel to rural areas to see development projects and meet people who have benefited from Bank support. “Vietnam is a great development story from which many other developing countries can learn,” Mr. Zoellick said. “I want to listen and learn how the Government has used the money and development expertise. It is one of the most powerful examples of how IDA supports the work of all donors and development partners.”
Dengue Fever Fact Sheet from U.S. Consulate General, Ho Chi Minh City
Dengue Fever occurs throughout Vietnam, with the greatest number of cases in the southern part of the country. Although Dengue Fever occurs year-round in Vietnam, it peaks in the hot rainy months of July and August. There is no vaccine or medicine against Dengue Fever. The only way to prevent it is to avoid being bitten by Aedes mosquitoes.
