Honda to Build Third Motorcycle Production Plant in Vietnam The addition of the third plant will increase Honda Vietnam’s production capacity by 500,000 to reach 2.5 million units/year.
ASEAN Foreign Ministers meet with partners in Bali, Indonesia, Jul 21 They confirmed their commitments to the Declaration on the Conduct of Parties in the East Sea (DOC) and the full and effective implementation of the DOC for peace, stability, security and maritime safety in the region.
Amid efforts on Korea, U.S. seeks Asia inroads with the Lower Mekong Initiative U.S. Secretary of State Clinton declared support for moves to ease tensions in the Koreas and in the South China Sea, a resource-rich area that has seen a growing number of disputes in recent months because of competing territorial claims from China, Vietnam, the Philippines and other Asian nations.
Skilled Foreign Staff Welcomed “This is aimed at helping local enterprises improve their competitiveness. Moreover, the skilled and experienced foreign employees can give training to local workers so that the latter can stand on their own feet in the future.”
HCM City aims to end strikes Party Secretary Le Thanh Hai said that strikes are very serious in the city (HCM City has 1.5 million workers, 1 out of 12 workers is involved in strikes). The city needs to deal with two issues: taking care of the life of workers and assisting businesses to deal with difficulties.
Code labours to strike right balance The draft Labour Code is one of the most important laws Vietnam will adopt in this decade. It is a pillar in the foundation of Vietnam’s competitiveness in global markets. The extensive consultations by the diverse stakeholders in the draft amendments and the progress that has been achieved through them are an encouraging sign that this process will reach a successful balancing of interests, but success should never be taken for granted.
Developing a 21st Century Workforce in Vietnam Vietnam’s top technical universities, working with universities in the U.S., Intel, and the U.S. and Vietnamese governments, have embarked on an ambitious initiative to modernize their engineering degree programs, in the “Higher Engineering Education Alliance Program.”
Vietnam Competitiveness Report, 2010 – Michael Porter, et. al. Vietnam’s growth since the mid-1980s has been driven by transition and structural change. More recently, the policy response mainly focuses on intensifying investment, especially in SOEs and infrastructure, to generate growth rather than on upgrading productivity and efficiency. But the economic logic behind this growth model ultimately has limited potential.
Vietnam Provincial Competitiveness Index, 2010 Using new survey data from 7,300 businesses in Vietnam that describe firm perceptions of their local business environments and hard data, the PCI 2010 continues to benchmark the capacity of local governments to develop regulatory environments for private sector development. The PCI 2010 report includes a special feature on survey results from 1,155 foreign invested enterprises.
