Vietnam moves into second place in apparel export to US The US buys around 58 percent of the country’s apparel exports, more than twice as much as Europe and Japan combined. It also represents 42 percent of Vietnam’s total exports to the US.

Hundreds queue for unpaid wages in Ho Chi Minh City Nearly 10,000 workers have been let go from companies in districts 8 and 12, industrial parks and Cu Chi District, according to the deputy chairman of HCM City Labour Federation.

Vietnam Stock Market Index Plunges to 3-year low With the banking and property markets still facing difficulties, the imposition of new income and capital gains taxes on securities at the beginning of 2009 would be further discouraging to investors, and the indices could continue to fall.

High tour prices put off foreign visitors, whose numbers are down 30-40% Tourist companies in Vietnam estimate the number of foreign visitors in 2008 will fall by 40 to 50 percent compared to 2007 among Asian tourists, while well-off tourists from the US and Europe will see a 20-to-30 percent drop. The difficult situation can last until the end of 2009. The occupancy rate of some five-star hotels in HCMC in the third quarter 2008 was approximately 61%, a decrease of about 16% compared to the same period of 2007.

Vietnam still slack on anti-corruption, international donors say World Bank (WB) would stop lending money to Vietnam if it discovered any wrongdoings regarding official development assistance (ODA) funding, the acting Country Director of the World Bank in Vietnam, Martin Rama warned Friday at a press briefing about the Consultative Group Meeting slated for December 4-5 in Hanoi.

Swedish diplomat: ODA-related corruption unacceptable Sweden’s ODA, for example, is tax money paid by each Swedish citizen to the Swedish government. ODA is used to assist other countries like Vietnam to eradicate hunger and reduce poverty, to build a democratic society without corruption.
