Senator Max Baucus to visit Vietnam Senate Finance Committee Chairman Max Baucus (D-Mont.) announced that he will visit Vietnam and the United Arab Emirates to strengthen relations at a time of change in the U.S. government and worldwide economic difficulty, and also to seek mutually beneficial trade opportunities. Baucus leads the Senate committee responsible for international trade policy in the U.S., and was instrumental in the granting of Permanent Normal Trade Relations to Vietnam.

Tourist arrivals plummit in Vietnam as global downturn bites Despite strong growth rates early in 2008, only 3.9 million tourists had come to Vietnam in the year to November, with arrivals down 22% in November. “We forecast arrivals in 2009 will fall 20-30 percent from 2008 because of the global economic crisis,” said Binh. “So we need to invest more in tourism products to make them return to Vietnam.”

Vietnam may devalue its currency next year “The exchange rate now is overly high in Vietnam and the government should ease the rate a little bit to support exports,” said Le Dang Doanh, a research fellow at the independent think-tank Institute of Development Studies.

November job losses in U.S. the largest one-month drop since 1974 The U.S. lost half a million jobs in November, the largest one-month drop since 1974, as employers brace for a recession that’s expected to stretch through much of 2009. The tally of 1.9 million jobs cut so far in 2008 surpasses the losses of the past two recessions. The current downturn could be the worst since the years immediately following World War II. The unemployment rate, at 6.7% in November, is expected to hit 8% over the next year as job losses continue.

Retail sales declined in November for the fifth-straight month, as consumers faced pressures from job losses and financial market turmoil.
