Local students take part in Community Service and Leadership Training Conference Over 300 students, teachers and community leaders from schools all over HCM City gathered to share ideas and work together to explore problems we face as global citizens, as part of the International School Ho Chi Minh City (ISHCMC) Global Issues Network’s 1st Annual Conference. The theme of the conference was “Using our differences to make a difference.”

Sustaining Vietnam’s Growth: The Productivity Challenge (McKinsey Global Institute) Vietnam now needs to boost labor productivity growth by more than 50 percent to maintain its rapid growth. It can do so by (1) Stabilizing the macroeconomic environment; (2) Strengthening productivity and growth enablers to enhance competitiveness; (3) Shaping a coordinated, industry-specific government growth agenda by targeting investment; and (4) Improving government performance to deliver a growth agenda.

McKinsey to Vietnam: Get Cracking (Wall Street Journal) Vietnam policymakers say the McKinsey experts aren’t telling them anything they haven’t heard already. “I totally agree with what is mentioned in the report,” said Vo Tri Thanh, vice director of the Central Institute for Economic Management, a government think tank. “These are not new discoveries, however. Where Vietnam should start, and how to do it, is still a question.”

Mitsui Engineering & Shipbuilding selects Vietnam as key production base will increase its Hanoi factory’s annual capacity from 40,000 to 60,000 tonnes within the next two years and aims to win contracts to build and install railways and bridges in Vietnam.

Business leaders less positive in 2012: Nielsen Two-thirds of business leaders believe business conditions in Vietnam have deteriorated.

Institutional corruption a thorny issue in Vietnam The ease with which a Ministry of Finance official allegedly received a bribe of VND80 billion (about $ 4 million) indicates corruption continues to plague State agencies. Upon scrutiny, Tuan’s alleged offense not only amounts to fraud, with the bribe received serving as lubricants to smoothen the progress of projects related to the State’s coffers, but also sheds light on institutional corruption, which has been increasingly serious.

District leaders fired over illegal land seizure in Hai Phong City Leaders of Haiphong Party Committee and People’s Committee announced the decisions to reprimand and penalize senior officials of the district’s Party cell and people’s committee for their wrongdoings in the removal of farmer Doan Van Vuon and his family from their land.

FDI firms less optimistic: 39% vs. 66% in 2010; limited connectivity with domestic firms (VN PCI) FDI enterprises had limited add-on effect on domestic businesses. The FDI firms imported up to 57.5% of goods and services, against 40% purchased locally. This limited connectivity with domestic private sector firms means limited transfer of technology, management experience and productivity improvement.

FDI rivals turn up the heat on Vietnam Vietnam dropped from 12th to 14th ranked on the FDI Confidence Index, while Indonesia, Malaysia, and others moved up. The Index is a regular survey of global executives conducted by A.T. Kearney. Companies participating in the survey account for more than $ 2 trillion in annual global revenue.

Vietnam – U.S. trade status and outlook, 2011 – 2020e Despite the difficult domestic and international economic environment, Vietnam – U.S. trade in 2011 continued its steady increase. Total bilateral trade in 2011 was about US$ 22 billion, with Vietnam’s exports to the U.S. about $ 17.5 billion (up 17%), and imports from the U.S. about $ 4.5 billion (up 19%), demonstrating once again that manufacturing foreign direct investment (FDI) and trade are strong and stable factors that support Vietnam’s economic and social development.
