Hanoi’s Red River sinks to 100-year low At 1.12m. At the same time last year, it was at 1.46m. Low wet-season rainfall compounded by a halt to discharge from the reservoirs for Hydroelectric plants are the major reason. 2007’s rainfall was only 80 – 85% of 2006. Water in the Red River could fall to only 1 meter.

Boeing Finalizes 787 Order with Vietnam Airlines and VALC Vietnam Airlines and VALC finalized an order for 12 Boeing 787-8s with a list value of $2 billion. The airline’s first 787-8, from the previous order, is planned for delivery in 2009. Vietnam Airlines plans to operate a total of 20 purchased and leased 787s by 2015.

Validating Vietnam – A Resurgence in Southeast Asia EMS/ODM Activity EMS and ODMs have flocked to China to maximize revenues and minimize cost structure. Now, however, a new regional trend in electronics manufacturing has emerged, and focuses on Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand and Vietnam. The contract manufacturing industry in Southeast Asia will experience a firm expansion of almost US$ 10 billion in 2006-2011.

Vietnam’s economy expanded at fastest pace since 1996 Vietnam’s GDP 8.5% in 2007 after rising 8.2% in 2006. FDI jumped to more than US$ 20 billion in 2007, from US$ 12 billion in 2006, with companies including Hon Hai Precision Industry Co., the world’s largest contract electronics manufacturer, and Compal Electro

U.S. imports of apparel from Vietnam continue to surge: up 30% over 2006 and are expected to reach $4.4 billion this year, more than 40% of Vietnam’s total exports to the U.S. of $10.5 billion. Major constraints on Vietnam’s apparel exports to the U.S. are not market access, but infrastructure shortages (lack of deepwater ports) and growing labor problems (shortages of workers, sharply increasing labor costs, and illegal strikes).

Concerns re WTO Commitment on Trading Rights and Distribution Rights Vietnam confirmed in the WTO Working Party Report that ” … from the date of accession, all foreign firms and individuals (including foreign-invested firms) would be able to engage in importation and exportation of producs … and, … would be permitted to sell or otherwise provide the imported product(s) to … firms in Viet Nam that have the right to distribute such product in Viet Nam.”
