Tue, Jun 19, Monthly Lunch: Intel’s Investment in Vietnam The future arrived in Vietnam, courtesy of Intel, on March 28, when the company officially started construction of a new assembly/test facility in Ho Chi Minh City’s Saigon Hi-Tech Park. What is now a former rice paddy will be transformed into a 500,000-square-foot plant that is expected to employ more than 4,000 people once it is completed. It will be the largest such facility Intel has every constructed. The new facility marks an inflection point not only for Intel, but for relations between two countries.

Furniture exports growing sharply, U.S. accounts for almost half the exports
Furniture shipments to the U.S. market reached US$ 744 million in 2006, about 40% of the total. The figure is expected to leap to US$1.26 billion this year, around half the country’s total, and about the level of exports to the EU and Japan combined (US$ 500 million and US$ 286 million respectively in 2006).

Intel supports ICT education in Vietnam – Intel World Ahead Program: US$ 1 billion over 5 years
Intel’s initiative is part of the Intel World Ahead program, which will begin with Intel’s plan to donate 1,050 desktop PCs to the Ministry of Education and Training for pilot deployment at schools nationwide. The five-year objectives of the World Ahead program are to extend broadband PC access to the world’s next billion users while training 10 million more teachers on the use of technology in education and with the possibility of reaching another one billion students.

Government decision on trading rights
Although the commitments can be found in the WTO agreements and commitments, the decision provides summaries and details in an easily readable format. The decision will give foreign investors a clearer view of the roadmap for commodities and related activities that they can trade in and engage in.
