Tue, Jun 19, Monthly Members’ Networking Lunch: Intel’s Investment in Vietnam The future arrived in Vietnam, courtesy of Intel, on March 28, when the company officially started construction of a new assembly/test facility in Ho Chi Minh City’s Saigon Hi-Tech Park. What is now a former rice paddy will be transformed into a 500,000-square-foot plant that is expected to employ more than 4,000 people once it is completed. It will be the largest such facility Intel has every constructed. The new facility marks an inflection point not only for Intel, but for relations between two countries.

Vietnam President Nguyen Minh Triet’s visit to the USA The Ministry of Foreign Affairs noted the visit of the President in the coming days. He will be accompanied by a large delegation of Vietnamese business executives, who will participate in Vietnam-U.S. Business Forums in New York City June 19, Washington DC June 22, and Los Angeles June 23. Vietnamese President Nguyen Minh Triet optimistic on ties with US
He will visit the US June 19-22, including New York City, Washington DC, Los Angeles, and will meet with President Bush and other US leaders, US residents as well as overseas Vietnamese living in the US, and US business leaders.

Charges filed in Vietnam bribery-gambling scandle involving Ministry of Transport and ODA funds
According to the indictment, Bui Tien Dung, director of the Transport Ministry’s Project Management Unit (PMU) 18, gambled away some US$ 700,000, which he stole from public funds managed by his agency, PMU-18, for building roads and other infrastructure.

Devastation of Vietnam’s beaches
Coral cover in Nha Trang bay shrank from 52.4 per cent in 1994 to 21.2 per cent in 2005. The bay may not have any coral left in 30 years. Pollution on beaches become worse, with sea water becoming smelly due to discharge of wastewater and garbage.

HCM City workers in EPZs and IPs lack living space
Over 200,000 workers are employed in HCMC EPZs and IPs, but investors hesitate to build lodging houses inside the industrial parks, primarily because of the time required to realize any returns on their capital investment—which can be anywhere from 12 to 15 years.
