Vietnam’s Airports Welcome Foreign Investment (Long Thanh, Phu Quoc) The country has merged three state-owned, regional airport operators under one national, state-owned company that will begin operations April 1. The national body will be responsible for developing all airports across the country.

New Strategic Partners U.S. and Vietnam Begin Tough Trade Talks • Amb Raymond Burghardt The Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) free trade agreement was a major topic of interest at the APEC summit in Nov 2011. Nine Asia-Pacific countries, including the United States and Vietnam, are now engaged in negotiating this agreement.

Vietnam to Buy Bad Debt From Banks to Ease Risk of Collapse The finance ministry will buy collateralized bad-debt from commercial banks to strengthen their balance sheets, under a plan to overhaul the industry by 2015 that was approved by Dung. Vietnam aims to cut bad-debt ratios at state-owned banks to below 3 percent by 2015, according to a statement posted on the government website on March 2.

Bipartisan bill targeting Chinese subsidies goes to Obama The bill came after an appeals court ruled in December the U.S. Commerce Department did not have authority to impose countervailing, or anti-subsidy, duties on goods from “non-market economies”. The decision endangered countervailing duties on about two dozen goods from China and Vietnam worth more than billion in trade, as well as potential new duties in cases involving solar panels and wind turbine towers from China.

Vietnam Plans to Legalize Sports Gambling Singapore’s success in creating family-oriented resorts has piqued the interest of investors and governments hoping to replicate that model in other parts of Southeast Asia.

Vietnam: Two decades of development lessons Opening up to world trade and investment (and official development assistance, or ODA) is the only path for a country to get rich. Macroeconomic stability is a prerequisite for following that path: instability and high inflation, for example, lead to low foreign direct investment (FDI). Yet if you want equitable development – where more than an elite benefit – that rapid growth must be built on supporting households. Most importantly, that means giving households private ownership of their assets, a legal framework that protects that ownership, and a minimum of regulations and taxes on their ability to do business. In other words, encourage households to invest, make profits and keep them.

Sustaining Vietnam’s Growth: The Productivity Challenge (McKinsey Global Institute) Vietnam now needs to boost labor productivity growth by more than 50 percent to maintain its rapid growth. It can do so by (1) Stabilizing the macroeconomic environment; (2) Strengthening productivity and growth enablers to enhance competitiveness; (3) Shaping a coordinated, industry-specific government growth agenda by targeting investment; and (4) Improving government performance to deliver a growth agenda.

FDI rivals turn up the heat on Vietnam Vietnam dropped from 12th to 14th ranked on the FDI Confidence Index, while Indonesia, Malaysia, and others moved up. The Index is a regular survey of global executives conducted by A.T. Kearney. Companies participating in the survey account for more than $ 2 trillion in annual global revenue.

Vietnam – U.S. trade status and outlook, 2011 – 2020e Despite the difficult domestic and international economic environment, Vietnam – U.S. trade in 2011 continued its steady increase. Total bilateral trade in 2011 was about US$ 22 billion, with Vietnam’s exports to the U.S. about $ 17.5 billion (up 17%), and imports from the U.S. about $ 4.5 billion (up 19%), demonstrating once again that manufacturing foreign direct investment (FDI) and trade are strong and stable factors that support Vietnam’s economic and social development.
