Local students take part in Community Service and Leadership Training Conference Over 300 students, teachers and community leaders from schools all over HCM City gathered to share ideas and work together to explore problems we face as global citizens, as part of the International School Ho Chi Minh City (ISHCMC) Global Issues Network’s 1st Annual Conference. The theme of the conference was “Using our differences to make a difference.”
$ 100 million commercial centre to be built in HCM City by Saigon Co-op and Mapletree Company, two leading real estate groups from Vietnam and Singapore. HOK, a leading global design with HQ in the U.S. is responsible for designs, architecture, and decorations. SC VivoCity will be built on 72,000sq.m, including 5 stories and basement.
PepsiCo inaugurates sixth beverage plant in Vietnam, with a land area of more than ten hectares and a capacity of 180,000 liter per year, making it one of the largest PepsiCo beverage plants in Vietnam. The plant will provide jobs for more than 2,000 direct laborers and thousands of indirect laborers.
FDI: strong driving force for Vietnam’s economy “Without FDI, the nation’s economy must have stood at about a meager growth rate of 3-4% annually for the last 25 years,” said Professor Nguyen Mai, chairman of the Vietnam Association of Foreign Invested Enterprises.
Infrastructure vital to boosting FDI: JETRO “Investors are highly conscious of the macroeconomic and infrastructure situation in Vietnam. The stability of the exchange rate, interest rates, the trade balance, pricing, and wage issues are all key factors in deciding on an investment destination.”
Vietnam looks to escape labour trap by offering incentives to foreign vocational schools, which would be developed using investment forms including wholly foreign-owned investment, joint ventures and public-private partnerships. 32% of foreign investors in Vietnam said the shortage of skilled workers was the biggest reason they were not operating at full capacity.
Vietnam encourages FDI in hi-tech sectors, but still installs barriers Compal, the computer manufacturer in Vinh Phuc province, has warned that with the current mechanism, even the big investors in Vietnam would leave or do not intend to expand their business in the country.
Inside the Chinese Boom in Corporate Espionage A far-reaching industrial espionage campaign has been in the works for years and targets a swath of industries: biotechnology, telecommunications, nanotechnology, and clean energy. One U.S. metallurgical company lost technology to China’s hackers that cost $ 1 billion and 20 years to develop. An Apple global supply manager pled guilty in 2011 to funneling designs and pricing information to China and other countries; a Ford Motor engineer was sentenced to six years in prison in 2010 for trying to smuggle 4,000 documents, including design specs, to China.
Tragedy at public hospitals Vietnamese patients spend around $ 1 billion per annum for treatment at hospitals in Singapore alone. The number of Vietnamese patients who go to Thailand, South Korea and other countries for treatment is also high.
Over 79,000 Companies Dissolved In 2011 By the end of 2011, there were 622,977 companies in Vietnam but 79,014 were dissolved, including 41,357 Joint Stock companies.

Hanoi emerging as a destination for foodies In 2010, the website Sherman’s Travel ranked Hanoi, Vietnam’s second-largest city after Ho Chi Minh City, as the No. 2 foodie destination in the world, behind Barcelona, Spain, and ahead of Rome and Tokyo.
FDI rivals turn up the heat on Vietnam Vietnam dropped from 12th to 14th ranked on the FDI Confidence Index, while Indonesia, Malaysia, and others moved up. The Index is a regular survey of global executives conducted by A.T. Kearney. Companies participating in the survey account for more than $ 2 trillion in annual global revenue.
