Vietam’s economic growth rate reached 8.5% in 2007, shows signs of overheating, asset bubble Inflation accelerated from 6.6 percent (year on year) in December 2006 to 15.7 percent by February 2008. Rapid increases in property prices have raised the prospect of a potentially dangerous bubble. Overheating is the result of rapid acceleration in credit growth, from 25.4 percent in 2006 to 50.6 percent by November 2007. This frenetic pace raises concerns about the quality of the portfolios of banks.

East Asian Economies Still Buoyant Amid Faltering Global Economy says World Bank 6-month Review Growth in developing East Asia will decline by around one to two percentage points to around 8.5% in 2008 as a result of the unfolding financial turmoil in the US and the resulting global slowdown, says the World Bank’s latest six-monthly review of the East Asia region’s economies.

Ministry of Industry and Trade to revise Circular 23/Decree 9 on Trading Rights, etc. Deputy Director of the Ministry of Industry and Trade’s (MoIT) Domestic Market Department, last week said Article 3.1 of the Circular would be revised in the spirit of removing the limitations towards FDI enterprises’ import rights. “It means that foreign invested enterprises will be allowed to sell their imported products to several Vietnamese distributors,”

Inflation in March hits 19% over last year Vietnam’s March Consumer Price Index is estimated to surge 3% in a month, compared with the fall of 0.2 per cent in March 2007 and decline of 0.5 per cent in March 2006. The CPI rose 19.4% from March 2007.

Vietnam, India curb rice exports as prices double While consumer nations like the Phillippines fret over food security, big producers are aiming to tame inflation by keeping more supplies at home to drive down domestic prices. In Vietnam, consumer prices rose by nearly 20 percent in March, while India’s wholesale price inflation has surged to a near-14 month high, posing a major policy challenge at a time when economic growth is slowing. The price of rice has shot up to more than US$ 600 per ton recently, double the average price of last year.

FCPA: Today, no bribe is too small to avoid the U.S. Justice Department’s attention The Justice Department is on the prowl and they’re staffing up. The number of enforcement actions seems to increase every year. Together, the Justice Department and the SEC brought an average of just one or two cases each year for the first 20 years of the law. More recently, however, there has been a surge of enforcement actions, with 55 reported investigations in the last two years alone.
