Sparton Corp Increases Business at Spartronics Vietnam “We’ve been fortunate to have expanded manufacturing at Spartronics Vietnam because it makes sense logistically and economically for us and for our customers.” The Vietnamese subsidiary, housed in a new 55,000 square-foot plant with the latest technology advancements, manufactures and assembles printed circuit boards, enclosures and black box solutions in various electronic segments.
Foreign investors optimistic about business in Vietnam In Jan-Apr, 2009, foreign investors registered to add almost 3.9 billion USD to their ongoing projects in Vietnam, compared to the total of 2.5 billion USD poured in new projects, indicating optimism about their business in Vietnam.
The “big boys” crowd into Vietnam’s fast food market A March 2009 Neilsen survey of fast food market development in Vietnam shows that KFC is the market leader. It has 20 shops opened in HCM City and nine in Hanoi, among an all-Vietnam total of 68 shops. Next is Lotteria (15 shops in HCM City and three in Hanoi, a total of 56 nationwide), and then Jollibee with eight shops so far.
Denge fever ravishes southern Vietnam More than 13,000 people in southern Vietnam have contracted dengue fever already this year, and 11 of them had died as of May 3. There is no commercial vaccine to protect against dengue yet.
Vietnam to issue $ 1.1 billion in government bonds The issue would increase the total fund allocated for infrastructure projects to 64 trillion dong this year as the government aimed to spend more to bolster economic growth, Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung said in a cabinet report.
Vietnam Jan-Apr car sales drop 38 pct year-on-year Dealers say demand could slow significantly for the rest of the year as consumers shelve big ticket items such as cars and houses. Last year, car sales increased by 37 percent to a record 110,186 units. Vietnam’s economy grew an estimated 3.1 percent in the first quarter from a year earlier, the slowest pace in at least a decade.
Vietnam fuel prices increase The Vietnamese government said on May 8 it has allowed oil product importers to hike pump prices for oil products by up to nearly 6 percent to offset higher world crude oil prices.
Vietnam won’t sell bauxite stakes to foreigners Vinacomin’s Tan Rai bauxite complex includes a $ 460 million alumina plant being built by China Aluminium International Engineering Co, the engineering arm of Aluminum Corp of China Ltd (Chalco). The Chinese company is building the operation under an Engineering, Procurement and Construction contract but will not take an equity stake in the project.
ADB projects 4.5% growth for Vietnam The ADB annual Asian Development Outlook said growth in Asia’s developing economies would fall to 3.4 percent this year, with Southeast Asia as a whole almost stagnant with a 0.7 percent rise. However, “when it comes to Vietnam, actually we should not use the word ‘downturn’ or ‘recession.’ It’s just a slowdown,” ADB’s country economist for Vietnam said, projecting the growth to rebound to 6.5 percent in 2010.
