Local students take part in Community Service and Leadership Training Conference Over 300 students, teachers and community leaders from schools all over HCM City gathered to share ideas and work together to explore problems we face as global citizens, as part of the International School Ho Chi Minh City (ISHCMC) Global Issues Network’s 1st Annual Conference. The theme of the conference was “Using our differences to make a difference.”
Apparel exports rise 14% in first four months Exports to the U.S., which accounts for more than one-half Vietnam’s apparel exports, increased by 15%. To Korea by 50%, to Japan by 30%, and to the EU by only 3%. FDI factories account for about 25% of Vietnam’s apparel industry, but their exports account for 65% of the total.

Vietnam Stocks Rise Most in Asia on Tax Breaks The VN index has surged 38 percent this year, the most in Asia, as the government took steps such as cutting interest rates twice in March and April to spur growth. The economy expanded at the slowest pace since 2009 in the first quarter. The stock gauge slid 27 percent last year as the government lifted borrowing costs to combat rising prices.

Investment attraction key for Mekong Delta From 1988 to 2011, the Mekong Delta only lured 565 foreign-invested projects with total investment of US$ 9.5 billion or less than 5% of total FDI into the nation. In 2011, only 96 projects worth US$ 402 million from foreign investors, lower than a quarter of the figure in 2010 and equivalent to a mere 3.5% of the national FDI in the same year.
150 SOEs must be equitized every year; HCMC pace is slow Equitization is slow for a number of reasons, but the decisive factor is the guidance of ministerial and local agencies, State groups and corporations is not drastic enough. The Ministry of National Defense, HCMC and Dak Nong have yet to submit their plans for SOEs reorganization and reform. There are 91 wholly SOEs in HCMC, and equitization in HCMC is processing at slow pace.
India to Dethrone Thailand, Vietnam as Top Rice Exporter Indian rice exports may climb to more than 7 million metric tons in the year ending Aug. 31, said an IRRI senior economist. Vietnam will export 7 million tons and Thailand 6.5 million tons, USDA data show. Rice prices will probably stay under pressure as global production outpaces demand for an eighth year.
1,200 “diplomatic cars” to pay tax arrears A tax of 5 – 90 percent will be levied on around 1,200 bogus diplomatic cars that are in use throughout Vietnam.
Heavy traffic in HCM City by Suoi Tien Theme Park As holidaymakers were returning to the city on after the long holidays (Apr 28-May1, 2012), traffic bottlenecks, especially those around Suoi Tien park, Mien Dong Coach Station in Binh Thanh District, and Cat Lai ferry terminal, led thousands of motorcycles and automobiles to move inch by inch.
Number of international adoptions plummets to lowest point in 15 years Some adoption advocates say the decrease is linked to a set of strict international guidelines known as the Hague Adoption Convention, which requires countries to set up a central adoption authority and a system of checks and balances to safeguard orphans and keep profit-driven players from corrupting a system that should be purely about helping unwanted children. Vietnam joined the Hague convention on Feb. 1, and U.S. officials say they are hopeful adoptions will resume within the next year.

ADB: Asian Development Outlook 2012 – Vietnam Outlook Safeguarding the banking sector should be the immediate priority. The longer-term requirement is to develop a diversified and efficient financial system that can mobilize the funding to meet the 7-8 percent economic growth target. These complex reforms, which will take years to complete, would benefit from coordination with the proposed restructuring of SOEs.
China + One = Vietnam and ASEAN ASEAN has the third-largest economy in Asia, after Japan and China. U.S. foreign direct investment (FDI) into ASEAN totaled $130 billion in 2007, the largest destination for U.S. FDI in Asia, and has grown 55% since 2004. As a developing region, ASEAN per capita income is low but its GDP is rapidly growing: an almost 170% increase over the past decade.
