U.S. Imports of Apparel from Vietnam Continue to Surge: up 26% in Jan-Sep 2007. The removal of U.S. quotas on apparel imports from Vietnam in January 2007, when Vietnam became a WTO member, contributed to the surge. The first nine months of 2007 have already equaled total U.S. apparel imports from Vietnam in all of 2006 ($ 3.4 billion). At this rate, U.S. apparel imports from Vietnam will reach $ 4.3 billion in 2007, placing Vietnam in 4th place as a U.S. supplier, behind only China, Mexico, and India. Apparel accounts for 40% of total U.S. imports from Vietnam.

Labor officials propose minimum wage increase effective Jan 1, 2008 The wage increase is also intended to minimize strikes, which break out due mainly to workers’ demand for higher pay. Most strikes occur in enterprises in the textile, garment, footwear and processing industries, which employ large numbers of workers and where the pay is generally low.

U.S. Commerce Secretary Gutierrez leads business mission to Vietnam “US exporters of goods and services to Vietnam are not yet enjoying the balance of market access opportunities that was promised when the bilateral trade agreement was signed,” Gutierrez noted. “The U.S. will boost its exports to Vietnam in the coming time, and the bilateral cooperation between Vietnam and the U.S. is in only the initial phase,” Gutierrez noted at the press conference. Vietnam’s President Nguyen Minh Triet proposed that the U.S. Commerce Secretary be supportive of persuading the White House to lift the apparel monitoring mechanism.
