Annual General Meeting, Wed, Dec 13, 2006

Typhoon Chebi (No. 20) is predicted to arrive Vietnam on Nov 15 or 16 just before the APEC CEO Summit Nov 17-18 and the APEC Leaders Meeting Nov 18-19. Relatively weak, with winds on only 50 knots (93 km/hr), it is moving slowly W. 24-hr forecast is that it will be downgraded to a “tropical depression” as wind speeds fall to below 35 knots (65 km/hr).

News from Geneva and Washington
Geneva – WTO Accession. On Nov 7, the WTO General Council approved Vietnam’s membership agreement. Vietnam now has to ratify the agreement, and it will become a member 30 days after it has informed the WTO that it has ratified. Washington – PNTR Legislation. Following the Nov 7 mid-term elections, the U.S. Congress reconvened. The U.S. House of Representatives has scheduled a Nov 13 on an amended PNTR bill, which states: “To authorize the extension of nondiscriminatory treatment (normal trade relations treatment) to the products of Vietnam, and to establish a procedure for imposing quotas on imports of subsidized textile and apparel products of Vietnam (Sponsored by Rep. Thomas / Ways and Means Committee). . Click here for details. The Senate has not yet scheduled a vote on the PNTR bill, and it may be December before the Senate vote.

President Bush to attend Nov 18-19 APEC Meeting in Hanoi, visit HCMC, Singapore, and Indonesia
President Bush will travel to Hanoi to attend the APEC Leaders’ Meeting on Nov 18-19, according to the White House Press Office. The President will have meetings with President Triet and Prime Minister Dung in Hanoi on Nov 17, and will hold bilateral meetings with other leaders while at APEC. While in Vietnam, President Bush will visit Ho Chi Minh City. The President also will travel to Singapore and Indonesia during his trip.

The U.S. Treasury Department issued a notice concerning housing costs eligible for exclusion or deduction by U.S. citizens and Permanent Residents receiving overseas earned income.

AmCham Scholarship Program 2006
Nearly 200 applicants took the third step in the selection process this weekend – the numerical critical reasoning test sponsored and administered by PricewaterhouseCoopers. In partnership with National University of Ho Chi Minh City (NUH), AmCham will grant scholarships to 20 top students of NUH including: University of Polytechnique, University of Natural Sciences, University of Social Sciences and Humanities, Faculty of Economics.
