Nov – U.S. Commerce Secretary to lead Business Development Mission
U.S. Commerce Secretary Carlos M. Gutierrez announced he will lead a business development mission to Vietnam in late 2007. The mission will highlight export opportunities for U.S. businesses, and is the first Secretarial Business Development mission to visit Vietnam.

President Bush to attend APEC leaders meeting in Sydney, 04-08 Sep 2007
An annual gathering of the leaders of 21 member economies that make up the world’s most dynamic economic region, comprising 56 percent of the world’s gross domestic product and half of the world’s trade. For the United States, this region is extremely important, as 66 percent of U.S. products go to that region. The importance that the President attaches to APEC is demonstrated by the fact that he has not missed an APEC leaders meeting since taking office. And this will be the seventh that he has attended.
U.S. economic and trade sanctions on Burma (Myanmar) extended
Economic sanctions were originally established by the U.S. Congress and approved by President Clinton in 1997. In addition to banning all U.S. imports from Burma (Myanmar), the legislation places a freeze on the regime’s assets in the U.S., requires the U.S. to vote against loans to the regime from the World Bank or IMF. Expect new U.S. product safety legislation this fall
Congressional action could include tougher product safety penalties on importers: increase fines for food and toy violations resulting in death from $ 500,000 to $ 50 million.
U.S. Interagency Working Group on import safety to hold public meeting
Formed in response to the concerns about health and safety problems related to imports of pet food, tooth paste, and toys from China.

Weather – Tropical depressions, storms, and typhoons

Dong Nai Bridge Traffic Diversion to start Aug 20
Beginning August 20, vehicles seating seven passengers or less and heading towards Ho Chi Minh City will be diverted to the Hoa An bridge, also located in Bien Hoa city.
Dong Nai Bridge may collapse at any time
The 43-year-old Dong Nai Bridge, connecting three industrial hubs—Ho Chi Minh City, Dong Nai, Binh Duong—can collapse any time, an official has warned. It is ” … safe, unless overloaded … ,” according to the Ministry of Transport.
