Bosch to build auto parts factory in Dong Nai, Vietnam Bosch will invest to US$ 79.6 million and employ 800 workers in the project, which will manufacture push-belts for continuously variable transmissions (CVT) for a variety of car models. The push-belts have only been manufactured at one other Bosch location to date – The Netherlands. Vietnam will now be the second CVT push-belt production location of the Bosch Group worldwide. The subsidiary’s managing director, said the project will contribute to developing Vietnam’s automobile industry, which has been hampered by an under-developed parts manufacturing industry.
Vietnamese plastics producers thirsty for raw materials Vietnam’s 2,000 plastics producers, 80% of which are located in HCM City, exported $ 750mil in 2007, while the figure is expected to reach $ 1bil this year. Domestic sources can provide just 300,000 tonnes of raw materials every year while currently Vietnam needs to import an additional 1.6-1.7mil tonnes of scrap material of different kinds.
American Company and Employees Indicted for Corrupt Payments to Vietnamese Officials The four FCPA counts charged against the individual defendants each carry a maximum penalty of five years in prison, a fine of the greater of $ 100,000 or twice the gain; and a three year term of supervised release. Nexus Technologies Inc., faces a maximum $ 10 million fine, if convicted on all counts.
US-Vietnam adoption pact ends over disagreements over fraud and corruption The U.S.-Vietnam adoption program also was shut down in 2003 after the U.S. raised similar concerns about corruption. The program resumed in 2006 after the two sides reached an agreement intended to ensure that adoptions were above board. But the U.S. says Vietnam has been unable to enforce the terms of that deal, largely because its central adoption authority lacks sufficient power to control orphanage directors.
Striking out at industrial action (strikes) The VGCL estimates put the number of strikes nationwide at 500 between January and July this year, 78 per cent of which took place at FIEs. Reasons for strikes, many of which were unprompted, include low wages, excessive overtime hours, unpaid social insurance and lack of communication between employers and workers.
