AmCham Scholarship Program 2007 – Deadline to submit applications is 10 Oct

U.S. Commerce Secretary Carlos M. Gutierrez announced he will lead a business development mission to Vietnam in late 2007. The mission will highlight export opportunities for U.S. businesses, and is the first Secretarial Business Development mission to visit Vietnam.

U.S. Commerce Department import monitoring program for textiles and apparel from Vietnam
The first full six months of import data are now available and the biannual review is underway as of 14 Sep 2007. The review may take several weeks to complete. Total textile and apparel imports from Vietnam Jan-Jul were US$ 2.4 billion, up 25% over the same period last year. If present trends continue, U.S. imports of textiles and apparel from Vietnam in 2007 are likely to reach US$ 4.25 billion, a substantial increase over the US$ 3.4 billion in 2006.

Vietnam to set up apparel export monitoring task force
The task force will be a government/business body with representatives from MoTI, the General Department of Customs, Vietnam Textiles and Apparel Association (Vitas), and the Vietnam Chamber of Commerce and Industry.

Vietnam’s Jan-Aug apparel exports US$ 5.1 billion, with US$ 3 billion exports to U.S.
This policy aims to support the production and exports of Vietnam textile and garments’ enterprises, to simplify export procedure, to reduce administrative paperworks, to prevent illegal transhipment and trade fraud, to protect Vietnam textile and garment prestige, and to regulate proper textile and garment export growth in accordance with international regulations.

Request for comment: MOIT inspection monitoring team on export of textiles and apparel to the U.S.

Dong Nai Bridge Traffic Diversion to start Aug 20
Beginning August 20, vehicles seating seven passengers or less and heading towards Ho Chi Minh City will be diverted to the Hoa An bridge, also located in Bien Hoa city.

Dong Nai Bridge may collapse at any time
The 43-year-old Dong Nai Bridge, connecting three industrial hubs—Ho Chi Minh City, Dong Nai, Binh Duong—can collapse any time, an official has warned. It is ” … safe, unless overloaded … ,” according to the Ministry of Transport.
