FEATURES

CBRE Vietnam shared its view on the industrial real estate market with challenging market conditions in 2012 and a 2013 forecast based on major recent case studies on who / where/ why. Despite difficulties and declines in FDI, a steady but reduced inflow is underway. FDI representatives continue to highlight that FDI in Vietnam is hindered by the high price of industrial land ... weak infrastructure, poor training of workers, and lack of supporting industries.

Our 2013 Membership Directory will be delivered to members starting next week, April 15.

In the meantime, our online Membership Directory is available now. The Directory is a highly effective method for getting to know about other AmCham companies and representatives. It's used in multiple ways by a number of different groups, and is used daily by members and employees at AmCham companies.

New Members use it when they join AmCham, referencing the special section on member benefits and AmCham events and activities. Our online Membership Directory is constantly updated, and you can learn about AmCham companies and their representatives at http://www.amchamvietnam.com/business-directory.

Morning Briefing: Hire Right & Avoid Firing

Firing employees is a tough task worldwide, more so in Vietnam, due to regulations. Very few firings are due to restructuring or changed business environment, beyond the control of the organizations. The majority of terminations are due to non-performance and employee not fitting the job, so hire right and avoid firing.

Vietnam is open to working with the United States and the private sector to see whether a U.S. proposal aimed at resolving the controversial issue of rules of origin for apparel will lead to a solution that would be acceptable to both countries in a Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) agreement, according to Tran Quoc Khanh, Vietnam's Chief TPP Negotiator.

By 2020, "heavy investment in emerging tourism markets will widen traveller choice, increase competition and potentially drive down prices and profit margins across the spectrum of hotels" (*). In the face of challenge, chains need to expand to new markets and independent hotels need to keep pace with big brands or join them. Therefore, to maintain a competitive edge is one of the most critical tasks that CFOs and top-level managers in this industry need to fulfill.

The chart shows U.S. imports from TPP countries, excluding Canada and Mexico. Vietnam was already the third largest supplier in 2011, overtook Singapore in 2012, and could soon overtake Malaysia to be the leading supplier. As an export market, Vietnam ranks quite low.

"The U.S. has been negotiating market access only with those countries with which we do not already have FTAs.Those negotiations are being conducted bilaterally at a pace that is responsive to the offers from the other countries. The key county is Vietnam, a very large market. We're looking to insure that we have significant market access in areas of interest to the U.S. Vietnam is looking for improved access in footwear and textiles. We are slowly making progress on a package that will be balanced, and addresses the interests of both countries, but we have to do so in a way that is comfortable for both countries." Barbara Weisel, Assistant USTR and Chief U.S. TPP Negotiator.
