Vietnam's first confidence vote puts cabinet on notice
The results of Vietnam's first-ever confidence vote by parliamentarians on senior government officials show that mismanagement of the economy is at the core of public dissatisfaction, analysts say. They add that the results also indicate that underperforming cabinet members will be held accountable if they fail to push through bold reforms in the near future. Officials who receive low confidence votes from two-thirds of the house will face another confidence vote, failure in which could lead to their dismissal. "As the Vietnamese economy has struggled to regain its dynamism, a share of delegates appear to be willing to identify the leaders they deem to be most responsible."

HCMC authorities urge the launch of a campaign called "Five Nations - One Destination" with Cambodia, Laos, Thailand, Myanmar and Vietnam, aiming for a region with a uniform tourist visa or visa exemption to attract international visitors. The city has asked VNAT to submit a proposal to this effect to the Government. Tourism authorities of Vietnam, Laos, Cambodia and Myanmar at international travel exhibitions held in HCMC have jointly promoted "Four Nations - One Destination." Now, they want to partner with Thailand for a joint marketing program for the five countries in the Lower Mekong Basin.

In Vietnam, since the Government's approval of the national program for encouraging voluntary blood donation in 2000, blood donation has been steadily increasing. However, the current blood donation level only meets 45% of demand. For example, in the week after Tet this year, only 70 out of 970 hospitals in Vietnam can receive blood for treatments.

 TPP Trade Deal Hopes Put Vietnam Back on the Radar for FDI
The prospect of duty-free exports to the US market spurs a rush by Chinese garment makers to set up factories in Vietnam. Attracted by those prospects, Texhong Textile, which sold 6.15 billion yuan (HK$7.7 billion) in yarns last year, is planning further expansion in Vietnam before even starting on the second phase of expansion already on the drawing boards. "Textile exports from Vietnam already enjoy zero duty to China. If they had zero-duty access to the US as well, our planned additional capacity wouldn't be enough," said Hong Tianzhu, Texhong's chairman.

Ho Chi Minh City deputy and Vietnam Bar Federation deputy chairman Truong Trong Nghia provides some sharp insight on the voting. As for officials that score low confidence votes, Resolution No. 35/2012/QH13 on confidence votes provides that officials with over half of the ballots with "low confidence" might step down. For officials with more than two-thirds of the votes of "low confidence" or over half of the ballots of "low confidence" for two consecutive years, the National Assembly Standing Committee and people's councils would consider of dismissal.

Experts from the US Department of Commerce are conducting a fact-finding tour of major shrimp producers and processors to examine the local shrimp farming and processing industry. The June 10-16 inspection tour is part of the DOC's scheduled plan to provide a basis for its final determination on the anti-subsidy case against shrimp imports from Vietnam
