On Thursday, July 25, President Obama will host President Trương Tấn Sang of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam at the White House. The President welcomes this opportunity to discuss with President Sang how to further strengthen our partnership on regional strategic issues and enhance our cooperation with ASEAN. Vietnam International Bank (VIB) signed an agreement with Texhong Yinlong, a subsidiary of Hong Kong-based Texhong Textile Group, on a VND420-billion credit (about US$20 million) for the textile company to develop its $200 million project in Quang Ninh Province. Dam Bich Thuy, general director of VIB, said: "We're very proud of being chosen to provide funding and financial solutions for an FIE with large investment in Vietnam. The VND420-billion credit for Texhong will be a key to Texhong's success in Vietnam and besides, it will create 5,000 jobs for the people in Quang Ninh and nearby provinces."

EVN clinched an agreement with Bank for Foreign Trade of Vietnam (Vietcombank) for a loan of VND14.5 trillion to build Lai Chau hydropower plant, with a total cost of VND35.7 trillion is expected to provide about 4.6 billion kWh of electricity annually. EVN fired its chairman last year [2012] after losing as much as 13.3 trillion dong ($635 million) in two years. The company is building a 33-story, twin-tower headquarters of glass and steel next to the centuries-old traditional houses of Hanoi's old quarter.

WB Vietnam chief economist warns of rising inflation; 8.2% by year-end
Viet Nam's Consumer Price Index (CPI) is expected to go up to 8.2 per cent by the year-end, the World Bank (WB) revealed yesterday in its economic outlook report. The figure is much higher than the Vietnamese Government's target of 6.5-7 per cent. Viet Nam's inflation this year is set to be affected by the minimum wage increase from the beginning of this month. Price hikes of electricity, hospital fees, transport and education services would also make prices strongly rise, said Deepak Misha, WB's chief economist.
