leaders delegation led by Chairman Mark Gillin on Sep 20. The meeting focused on opportunities for FDI in Binh Duong province when the TransPacific Partnership (TPP) is concluded and enters into force. Despite continuing economic difficulties in Vietnam, industrial production in Binh Duong increased 12.3% in the first eight months of the year, and FDI exceeded $1 billion, of which 40% was expansion of existing FDI facilities. In addition, Binh Duong had prepared conditions to attract even more FDI with TPP.
BECAMEX-Tokyu Corp developing Binh Duong New City

based on years of experience in Japan, where the Tama Garden City area is the largest and widely viewed as the most successful land development ever undertaken by a private railway company in Japan. From 1956 to 1984, the Tokyu Corporation transformed a vast, scarcely inhabited area into a planned community of 5,000 hectares and nearly half a million residents. Tama Garden City, stretches along a 15-to-35 kilometer band southwest of Tokyo. Based on a 1956 master plan, land development starting in 1959, rail transportation opened in 1966, and accelerated development in the 1970s and 1980s. and 9.5 million landline subscribers by the end of 2012, according to the 2013 Vietnam Information & Communications Technologies White Paper. In 2012, IT industries earned about US$25.5 billion, representing a year-on-year increase of 86.3 percent, while postal services' turnover reached almost US$274 million, up 11.15 percent over the 2011's figure.
U.S. Textile Plants Return ... thanks to automation technology

American manufacturing has several advantages over outsourcing. Transportation costs are a fraction of what they are overseas. Turnaround time is quicker. Most striking, labor costs aren't that much higher than overseas because the factories that survived the outsourcing wave have largely turned to automation and are employing far fewer workers. Monitoring worker safety in places like Bangladesh, where hundreds of textile workers have died in recent years in fires and other disasters, has become a huge challenge. These trends are changing the American textile and apparel industries.
Ashley Furniture Industries to build another factory in Binh Duong, expand into retail sales with Vietnam partner

Ashley Furniture Industries CEO Todd Waneck visited Ho Chi Minh City and Binh Duong to discuss the possibility of opening another factory in Binh Duong, as part of its plan to expand out of China and raise its employment in Vietnam from 4,000 at present to 10,000 workers by 2015. He has worked with Pho Xinh CEO Duong Quoc Nam on a new plan for bilateral cooperation. A distribution centre for Ashley products will open in 2014 with a chain of home furniture stores in Pho Xinh supermarkets across Vietnam.
Email game changer: how to cut your inbox by up to 60%

Email is still the killer app of the internet. It's also the biggest impediment to workplace productivity. You may not be able to change the noise level of the email ecosystem, or extricate myself from it, because it's critical for business. What you can change is your own behavior, so you can focus on developing ways to minimize the noise and maximize the value of email.

FDI sector now the main engine as other pillars crumple

The foreign direct investment (FDI) sector is now the key driver in the local economy while other pillars, notably the local private sector, the State-owned sector and agriculture are all crumpling. The export revenue of the FDI sector in the January-August period posted 26% growth, exclusive of crude oil, compared to a mere 3.1% growth recorded by local enterprises. The total commodity and service retail revenue of the sector in the period grew 37.5% year on year, while State-owned enterprises saw a contraction of 6.7% and local enterprises a growth rate of 14.2% only.

Determining national characteristics is treading a minefield of inaccurate assessment and surprising exception; however, there is such a thing as a national norm. By focusing on the cultural roots of national behavior, both in society and business, we can foresee and calculate with a surprising degree of accuracy how others will react to our plans for them, and we can make certain assumptions as to how they will approach us.

A new, more diverse, globally competitive industry. "Still Standing" is a fascinating look at a few NC souls who decided not to buy into the idea that their businesses had no future.
