In Vietnam, since the Government's approval of the national program for encouraging voluntary blood donation in 2000, blood donation has been steadily increasing. However, the current blood donation level only meets 45% of demand. For example, in the week after Tet this year, only 70 out of 970 hospitals in Vietnam can receive blood for treatments.

MOLISA Minister Pham Thi Hai Chuyen, at the TV program "Dan hoi, bo truong tra loi" (people ask, ministers answer) also said that if the minimum wage is adjusted right now, many businesses would go bankrupt and workers would become unemployed. Therefore, any decision on the minimum wage adjustment will only be made after a thorough consideration. The defining of the minimum wage would be undertaken by the National Wage Council which is expected to become operational in July. The agency would draw up the wage increase roadmap which can both ensure the enforcement of the law and the health of businesses. The minimum wage increase plan would be then submitted to the government.

Under the revised draft on Corporate Income Tax (CIT), a common rate will be 22 per cent instead of current 25 per cent and will begin to take effect on January 1, 2014, and 20 per cent after January 1, 2016 while preferential taxes will be reduced from 20 per cent to 17 per cent. Deputies lined up for a more aggressive tax reduction road map that proposes applying a common rate of 20 per cent beginning July 1, 2014, saying it would boost domestic enterprises, make it easier for them to pay taxes and keep pace with the regional trend.

A deal among the U.S., China, the EU and nearly two dozen other countries to eliminate duties on billions of dollars of technology products could be reached in the next two months. The countries are negotiating an expansion of the WTO's Information Technology Agreement, a 16-year-old pact that eliminated duties on a long list of technology products including personal computers, laptops, telephones, fax machines, computer software, semi-conductors and many office machines. The agreement's original membership has grown to 75 over the years, including the 27 nations of the European Union. That is less than half of the WTO's 159 members, but still encompasses about 97 percent of global trade in the products.

18th Round to be held in Malaysia July 15th - 25th.In their work during this 10-day round, the negotiating groups covering services, government procurement, sanitary and phytosanitary standards, trade remedies, labor, and dispute settlement moved their work forward significantly. The TPP countries also successfully advanced work on the other legal texts, including technical barriers to trade, e-commerce, rules of origin, investment, financial services, intellectual property, transparency, competition, environment and other issues. On the more challenging issues of intellectual property, competition, and environment, negotiators had productive discussions and agreed on next steps to continue their work.
Foreign companies prohibited from buying coffee directly from farmers

From June 7, foreign invested enterprises would lose the right to collect coffee directly from farmers. It's clear that by laying down the policy, the state aims to protect domestic companies. However, the policy may harm farmers. Circular No. 08 which has been issued by the ministry stipulates that the FIEs licensed to export products can only buy materials from Vietnamese businessmen, who have business certificates or the right to import products and distribute goods, for export, while they cannot develop the collection networks of their own.

IBM and Vietnam Mobile Telecom Services Company (VMS), one of Vietnam's leading telecom companies, announced a collaboration to build an advanced, end-to-end mobile computing platform. The agreement will allow VMS to expand into new markets, while enhancing its enterprise application development capabilities and improving workforce productivity. This collaboration with IBM, a part of VMS' five-year Information Technology (IT) strategy, will be led by its subsidiary, Vietnam Mobile Telecom Services Center II (VMSII), which is the top revenue contributor for VMS.

The National Steering Committee for Tourism will present to the Government draft policies meant to make it easier for international tourists to come to Vietnam, including the loosened visa policy proposal. An official of the Vietnam National Tourism Administration told the Daily that the visa-free policy should be maintained for the seven major markets, including Japan, South Korea, Russia, Sweden, Denmark, Norway and Finland. Besides, the visa-free stay for tourists should be 30 days instead of 15 days like now.

Shipping containers have transformed global trade. In fact, the container has been more of a driver of globalisation than all trade agreements in the past 50 years taken together. The first container ship in 1956, reduced loading costs to $0.16/ton to compared with $5.83/ton for loose cargo on a standard ship. Containerization quickly spread: between 1966 and 1983 the share of countries with container ports rose from about 1% to nearly 90%, coinciding with a take-off in global trade (see chart).
