Food Safety Training Summit
In 2017, Vietnam plays host to the Global Food Safety Forum’s highly anticipated annual conference. Vietnam’s food and seafood products play a vital role in the global supply chain; in 2016, Vietnam’s seafood exports reached $7 billion, of which $1.4 billion of fish and shellfish exports went to the U.S., accounting for over 40% of U.S. imports of $3.5 billion of agriculture products and food from Vietnam.
This year’s conference will bring together food safety officials, experts and specialists from both U.S. and Vietnamese governments, private sectors, and international organizations to discuss challenges and opportunities in the global food safety arena, with a particular focus on new food safety requirements in Vietnam’s export markets, including especially the U.S. market.
Under the U.S. Food Safety Modernization Act of 2011, new food safety regulations such as the “Foreign Supplier Verification Program” and “Voluntary Qualified Importer Program” are now coming into effect. The Conference speakers, senior food safety officials as well as business service providers, will provide details on the expectations behind the new regulations, and practical advice on how to comply with them. Equivalence between the U.S. and Vietnamese food safety systems will also be a topic for discussion. Of particular importance will be the full enforcement of the USDA/FSIS inspection of imports of silsuriformes fish and fish products, including catfish, with 100% re-inspection of all imports starting on Aug 2, by direction of the U.S. Congress.
