World Blood Donor Day was first initiated and established to be celebrated annually on 14th of June by “the World Health Organization, the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies” in the year 2004. About 108 million blood donations are collected globally every year. Nearly 50% of these blood donations are collected in high-income countries, home to less than 20% of the world’s population. The average blood donation rate is more than 9 times greater in high-income countries than in low-income countries.

In Vietnam, since the Government approved the national program for encouraging voluntary blood donation in 2000, there have been more and more people showing interest in blood donation. That’s why every year, the number of blood units donated  keeps steadily increasing. Although in 2016, the whole country received up to 1,2 million blood units through many donating programs, the current level only meets 66% of demand. Therefore, blood donation event becomes an important part of AmCham annual CSR Plan. By holding this meaningful programs, AmCham hope to let much more volunteers know and join with us. For the last 7 years,  5,842 AmCham’s Donors from Ho Chi Minh City, Thu Duc and Binh Duong have donated  8,964 blood units.

The AmCham CSR Group together with British Business Group Vietnam are working with Hospital of Hematology and Blood Transfusion  to organize an AmCham World Blood Donor Day from July 09 to July 21 at locations provided.

Targeting employees of the FDI sector and other enterprises in HCM City, the event aims to:

1. Build wider public awareness of the need for year – round blood donation to maintain adequate supplies and achieve a national self-sufficiency of blood

2. Motivate employees of business sector to donate blood more actively

3. Thank individuals who donate blood regularly and encourage young people to join in as well

4. Promote the inclusion of blood transfusion services in national preparedness

5. Engage authorities in the establishment of effective national blood donation programs

6. Offer opportunities to build networking, cooperation among AmCham CSR professionals and volunteers

The lives and health of millions of people are affected by emergencies every year. In the last decade, disasters have caused more than 1 million deaths, with more than 250 million people being affected by emergencies every year. This situation has generated substantial health care demands and the need for front-line treatment. Amongst many measures, blood transfusion is an essential component of emergency health care. Emergencies not only increase the demand for blood transfusion but also make its delivery challenging and complex. Therefore, this year campaign concentrates on blood donation in emergencies.

With the theme Blood Donation is as an action of solidarity and the second message“BE THERE FOR SOMEONE ELSE. BLOOD. SHARE LIFE, World Blood Donor Day 2018 hope to encourage people to donate blood regularly in order to ensure the sufficiency of  blood stock. Besides, World Blood Donor Day 2018 also underlines the role of every single individual in the blood transfusion activity, especially when emergencies happen.
