East West Corridor Week, 27 Aug – 01 Sep
The East-West Corridor stretches 1,450 km across Myanmar, Thailand, Laos and Vietnam, from Mawlamyine in Myanmar to DaNang City in Vietnam. It is one of the key economic corridors in the Greater Mekong Subregion (GMS), which aims at deepening integration and trade, investment linkages, and reducing poverty in the region. When the road infrastructure is completed, the EWEC may well become not only a dynamic development hub, but also an important link connecting the Greater Mekong Sub-Region to huge markets in Northeastern and Southern Asia. The Government of Vietnam has decided to organize the EWEC Week 2007 from August 27 to September 1, 2007 in DaNang City with a view to promoting trade, investment and tourism opportunities of the EWEC to business leaders within and outside the region. Weekly Update 2006-09-25: New Committees – Furniture; Logistics & SCM

PNTR and WTO Accession
Sens. Elizabeth Dole (R-N.S.) and Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.) wrote a letter to USTR Susan Schwab on Sep 18 again urging her to defend the U.S. textile industry from unfair trade practices by Vietnam. They have placed holds on PNTR legislation.

New Law on Social Insurance will come into effect January 1, 2007.
Russin & Vecchi, International Legal Counsellors have prepared a memo that compares, analyzes and discusses the impact of the new Law on Social Insurance.

Textile / Garment Executive Employment Opportunities
A large US textile company seeks GM, CFO and Plant Manager for US$ 50 million new venture in Vietnam.

Weekly Update 2006-09-18 House vote on PNTR likely in November

PNTR and WTO Accession
House Republican leaders plan a Nov. 13 vote on PNTR for Vietnam, according to a report in the Congress Daily. The bill should enjoy broad bipartisan support in the House. One reason it has not passed already is concern about voting on trade legislation right before the Nov 7 election.

PNTR and WTO Accession – will be influenced by U.S. General Elections on Nov 7

Congress returns from its August “District Work Period” this week for a one month session before the October 6 target adjournment to prepare for the November 7 U.S. general elections. After a year of political turmoil, Republicans enter the fall campaign with their control of the House in serious jeopardy, and the possibility of major losses in the Senate. Two independent political analysts have forecast a narrow Democratic takeover of the House of Representatives, if current political conditions persist. In Geneva, additional informal meetings are planned and formal WTO Working Party talks to resolve remaining issues from the WTO Working Party talks starting July 19. The remaining issues not yet agreed in the multilateral report include labor standards, textiles and apparel, trading rights (importing into Vietnam), and the excise duty on spirits and beers. These September meetings are necessary to prepare for accession by the WTO General Council meeting October 10-11, or December 20-21.
