APCAC elects new leadership and sets a bold agenda for U.S. business in Asia
KUALA LUMPUR – The Asia Pacific Council of American Chambers of Commerce (APCAC) held its 50th Anniversary Board Meeting and has elected Marie Kissel as its new Chairman. Ms. Kissel is based in Tokyo and is Senior Advisor, International Government Affairs for Abbott. Ms. Kissel, a longtime American business executive in the region, succeeds Jackson Cox who has served as APCAC Chair for the past three years.
APCAC 2018: A bold future for US businesses in Asia
One of the most anticipated business summits has wrapped up with new resolve for business engagement between Asia and the United States, despite recent announcements on international trade and tariffs.
330 leading business, government, diplomatic and academic figures from more than 12 countries across Asia and the US met in Kuala Lumpur Malaysia for the 2018 APCAC (Asia Pacific Council of American Chambers of Commerce) Business Summit.
The Chairman of APCAC, Jackson Cox, says the conference has proved vitally important in creating connections and deepening business engagement in what is the fastest growing region of the world.

On Tuesday U.S. Trade Data was released. If ASEAN were a single market, its merchandise trade surplus with the United States would be second only to that of China. Service trade date will not be available until later this year. In 2016, the United States ran a $9.4 billion service trade surplus with ASEAN.

Natural gas trumps coal in self-sustainable plans
Under current fiscal terms, around 40 per cent of the revenues from sales of natural gas accrue to the government for spending in Vietnam, up to $7 billion in revenue per 1 gigawatt of power.

Natural gas is playing a crucial role in displacing coalfired power plants, especially in the south. The MVEP strongly supports Vietnam’s energy security, as it demonstrates the development of Vietnam’s natural resources instead of relying on imports. Importing energy instead of utilising domestic resources can leave us vulnerable.

Singing Ceremony of MOU on Pharmacy Excellence Program
A partnership between educational institutions and business groups is set to contribute to the development of continuous medical education for pharmacists in Vietnam. At the sidelines of the APEC week in Da Nang, a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) was signed on 9 November 2017 between Hanoi University of Pharmacy, University of Medicine and Pharmacy at Ho Chi Minh City, RMIT University Vietnam, Healthcare Committee, European Chamber of Commerce in Vietnam and Pharma Group Vietnam.

AmCham Representative joins meeting of Advisory Council on Administrative Procedure Reform
Ha Noi, Aug 16, 2017, at the request of Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc, representative of AmCham Board of Governors, HCMC, Mr. Fred Burke, Managing Partner, Baker & McKenzie joined the meeting of the Advisory Council on Administrative Procedure Reform (ACAPR) at the Office of the Government. The ACAPR meeting was convened by the Prime Minister to survey the effects of prior administrative procedure reforms for the first 7 months of 2017, and discuss the Council’s activities.
On behalf of AmCham Vietnam, HCMC, Mr. Fred Burke delivered our comments which focused on unofficial costs and fees that enterprises endure when complying with the current administrative procedure requirements. Mr. Burke offered solutions for the reduction of these burdens as well as strategies to introduce WTO compliant regulatory programs.
